The Right to Die There is only one thing that no human being has ever been able to escape from, Death. The definition of this term has become a crucial element in familial, ethical, religious, and even medical decisions. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a human life ends with the permanent cessation of vital bodily functions. However, in some cases when a person knows death is inevitable, he or she decides to accelerate the process. The medical field refers to euthanasia as the action that a physician does by ending a life at the request of the patient. Valentina was diagnosed with this illness as a baby, and during her last months, was relied on breathing machines and fed through a tube. When a patient at the same hospital died, Valentina decided to finally plea for euthanasia. In order to do it, the teenager posted an emotional and heart-breaking self-shot video on YouTube, asking the President of Chile for permission to end her own life. Valentina Maureira stated: “I urgently request to speak to the president because I 'm tired of living with this illness... I want her approval so I can get a shot that will make me sleep forever” (Akbar, dailymail.co.uk). Even though the Chilean President Michelle Bachellet went to the hospital and visited Valentina, the government rejected her request to be euthanized. Finally, after 2 months, Valentina died in the hospital on May, 2015. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, argued that his wife would never have wanted to live in those circumstances and attempted to get the feeding tube removed. On the other hand, her parents disagreed and fought to keep her alive. After the family spent years fighting in this case, on March 18, 2005, the feeding tube was removed, and the U.S. District Court in Florida denied any request to reinsert it.
