A huge country with a lot of space, surrounded by water and next to Europe leads to imperialism in Africa. Imperialism in Africa has been a negative effect for the people in Africa, but however a positive effect for the European nations. Since the Europeans started scrambling to Africa they have been motivated to dig deeper due to the economic and social success they had from slavery, trade and having territory. Differently, Africa was being torn apart socially and economically by many other countries. Even people in Africa and Europe who are leaders or are in the army have big differences on what's going on in the world. These differences and purposes will be explored.

When looking at the mapby Sir Edward Hertslet you can visually view the fact the Africa is divided into many territory ruled by a various of other countries (Hertslet). Africa was divided for economic power between European countries, which resulted in Africa being negatively affected and use for other gains. Subsequently, due to European and American influence in Africa, animals and the environment were being killed / destroy. For example in 1909-1910, a picture of Theodore Roosevelt killing a Elephant was shown as an illustration in Theodore Roosevelt’s book (African Game Trails). Elephants horns were worth money (economic). This picture is just one example of how Europeans and Americans negatively affected the environment in Africa for economic gaines. Subsequently, slave trade destroyed villages in Africa and changed people lives. For example, Olaudah Equiano who was a slave described the the negative affect the people of Africa. Equiano describes slave trade (ship) as making him “long suffered to indulge my grief; I [Equiano] was soon put down under the decks, and there I [Equiano] received such a salutation in my nostrils as I [Equiano] had never experienced in my life: so that, with the loathsomeness of the stench, and crying together, I became so sick and low that I was not able to cat, nor had I the least desire to taste anything” (Equiano). European gain economic and social progress from Africa. Many people from Europe agree that there involvement in Africa was good. A French statesman, Jules Ferry stated that the “French policy of colonial expansion was inspired by... the fact that a navy such as ours cannot do without safe harbor's, defenses, supply centers on the high sea” (Ferry). Ferry statement shows that the imperialism was helpful for French own security and centers. European countries caused divisiveness in Africa Villages were destroyed in Africa and as a result there was extreme damage in Africa. Laura Collins a female missionary who went to Kenya showed the devastation in Africa. The picture was of two differently families with different clothes in Europe. In this picture you can look at the background and see the devastation of the area in Africa in both pictures (Images of Colonial Africa). Subsequently, in 1892, London Charivari published a picture of a British colonist, Cecil Rhodes. In this picture Rhodes is standing across Africa representing a telephone line from South Africa to North Africa. This picture represents European nations were successfully trying to build and take over Africa communications (Sambourne).
