Ethos Pathos Logos Analysis

Most times it is easy to get away from things that bother people. But sometimes there are things in life that people can run from but it never truly leaves them. They can spend their whole life running but it will not change a thing. For example, when people try to quit their faith it just comes back to haunt them, and they can not just forget the things that they learned. The author of this excerpt is trying to get away from his faith because he is an “Ex-Catholic” but it is not that simple most of the time. Just because they stop going to church does not mean that they are done with their religion. It is all around them and very hard to escape from. The author has promised his children that they can group to believe what they like, unlike him they will not be forced to be Catholic. The best thing one can do is embrace it, they do not have to support it but they can acknowledge that is where they came from and that it taught them important lessons. • Pathos: “Their nightmares will be free of nuns, priests, fire, and crucified gods.” This is appeals to pathos because it uses the thought of children having nightmares about “fire and priests” to describe a child that is traumatized by religion. It persuades readers to consider the options when they are thinking about following a specific faith. • Logos: “Just as I will always be American and Southern, I will always be Catholic.” This appeals to Logos because it is only logical that people retain where they came from. Just because someone stops going to church does not mean that they are not religious. Once they go that is it. This describes the fact that no matter how hard the author tries to escape his past.
