Ethnic Identity Development Ethnic identity development of ethnic minorities in the United States has attracted an increasing attention in the adolescent development and college transition literature. A review of literature related to ethnic identity development highlights two major lines of research: 1) identity processes from a developmental perspective (Phinney, 1989) and 2) the content and meaning of identity (Seller, Rowley, Chavous, Shelton, & Smith, 1997; Yip, 2014). Process is defined as “the way in which individuals come to understand the implications of their ethnicity and make decisions about its role in their lives” (Phinney, 1993, p.64). Past research on ethnic identity conducted using this approach specifically examined the developmental progression that individuals go through, including exploration and commitment. Other scholars have focused on exploring the content, significance, and meaning of ethnic identity within the individuals (Sellers et al, 1997). According to Phinney, ethnic …show more content…

Phinney (1992) developed a model that specifically describes ethnic identity development. In her theoretical model, she described ethnic identity as a three-stage process, including unexamined, search/moratorium, and achievement. Similar to identity statuses described by Marcia (1980), Phinney suggested that ethnic identity development is a process where individuals are moving from lack of exploration of ethnicity (unexamined) to having a clear sense of their ethnic identity through search and exploration (achieved). Phinney’s model views ethnic identity development “as a continuous variable, ranging from the lack of exploration and commitment … to evidence of both exploration and commitment (Phinney 1992, p.161).
