Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
According to the teaching of a young age my ancestry is of English descent. The surname Aycock comes from Anglo-Saxon origin. I was told by my grandmother that the original spelling of the family surname is Heycock. The earliest immigrants of my bloodline came from England aboard ships in the year 1682. Leaving England behind for economic, religious, and political reasons my ancestors set out to find new hope (V. Aycock, personal communication, 1976). Therefore, I am of the belief that my ethnic group both immigrated to and colonized the United States of America.
The English paved the way for immigration for most of the other ethnic groups. The United States came to be by the English developing colonies. Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the original English settlement. Tough times were had in the beginning of Jamestown. Famine and disease took many of the settlers. By June 1612 the first tobacco began being grown on farms. That same year brought the introduction of slavery to the original 13 colonies (Oracle Education Foundation, 2008). English descent does not make me condone the actions of the colonists in any sort of way. Not only those brought in from Africa but the Native Americans who were already here endured the same torture as slaves.
I believe these actions had a strong influence on the prejudice, segregation, and racism in the United States of America. It is evident that by these early actions of the colonists that this way of thinking would be accepted up until President Lincoln abolished slavery in 1865. Even after the abolishment of slavery prejudice, racism, and segregation became more evident and violent toward minorities. Today every ethnic background is responsible for som...

...nd not just the privileged few. I do not believe it is the year 2010 and I am writing an essay about concerning discrimination today. In my mind this should be a history paper about actions that happened a long time ago and are no longer present in today’s world. According to Corporation for National and Community Service (2010), "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” (How did you answer Dr. King's question?).

From the start of the American Civil War, 1860, until the end of the Reconstruction, 1877, the United States of America endured what can be considered a revolution. Prior to the year 1860, there was a lack of union because of central government power flourishing rather than state power. Therefore, there was a split of opposite sides, North and South, fighting for authority. One major issue that came into mind was of slavery. At first, there were enactments that were issued to limit or rather prevent conflict to erupt, such as the numerous compromises, Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. They did not fulfill the needs of the states, South states in particular; therefore, in the year 1860, the Civil War had commenced. There was the issue of inequality of Blacks in suffrage, politics, and the use of public facilities. However, much constitutional and social advancement in the period culminated in the revolution. To a radical extent, constitutional development between 1860 and 1877 amount to a revolution because of events like the Emancipation Proclamation, Civil Rights Act, the amendments that tried to change African Americans lives in American Society and contributed to get the union together. There is the social developments as well that to a lesser extent had amounted to the revolution because of organizations like the Klu Klux Klan, Freedmen’s Bureau lacking, and discrimination against African Americans that caused progression of violence and white supremacy.
The 18th Century was a time where most immigrants were of Irish, British, and German descent. From the 1890’s, through the next couple decade, Italians, and Jews would be the cause a new wave of immigration. Between 1900 and 1915, 3 million immigrants would take the journey, and travel to America. They would come through the famed “Ellis
...to the foundation of American Society. We continue to support and maintain these social norms through deliberated and non deliberated ways, forced servitude and the advancement of racial legislation fostered racism in the United States. The most intellectuals of their time, contemplated to the degree of what the New Worlds people were considered to be human. Some Europeans had hope for Natives and possible guidance, but it became evident, that profit and status were more viable entities than any sort of human decency or equality. As minorities began to unify and protest discrimination, legislation was built off of Anglo-Saxon domination and ideologies, only to continue to delay the growth of colored people. Laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act, Separate but Equal, and Jim Crow Laws are just a few examples of such legislation inflicted upon colored groups in America.

During the semester we have explored multiple case studies that have had some rather cut and dry solutions. Our final case study features the very grey area of workplace cultural discrimination providing a scenario in which there is possible evidence of several counselors who, during lunch break, are singling out clients of a certain minority and speaking in a highly derogatory fashion about them. In this scenario we are part of the supervisory staff and the counselor who brings us this information has been in the field for half a decade and is the same race as one of the main counselors he has concerns about. That counselor has only a brief amount of experience and this is his first position since obtaining his CSC-AD certification. We
Throughout this course we learned about slavery and it's effects on our country and on African Americans. Slavery and racism is prevalent throughout the Americas before during and after Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Some people say that Jefferson did not really help stop any of the slavery in the United States. I feel very differently and I will explain why throughout this essay. Throughout this essay I will be explaining how views of race were changed in the United States after the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, and how the events of the Jeffersonian Era set the stage for race relations for the nineteenth century.
Discrimination happens every day, whether inadvertently or not. This mindset has been practiced for thousands upon thousands of years. We live in a society that is quick to judge other individuals based on their cultural background, race, age, even their financial status. Discrimination has been an ongoing issue throughout the world since the beginning of time. Women, throughout history, have experienced discrimination first hand for a long time. The women’s cultural background, race, financial status mattered, but not as much as the fact that she was a woman first. For example, women were thought of as fragile individuals with bodies that were not built to a man’s standard. For thousands
The article, “RACE AND ETHNICITY- CHANGING SYMBOL IS OF DOMINANCE AND HIERARCHY IN THE UNITED STATES” by Karen I. Blu is an exceptional work that clearly expounds on the racial and ethnic groups especially in America. Racial and ethnic groupings are gradually becoming popular in the public arena, in which people are shifting their focus on classifying other people on the basis of racial groupings to rather classifying them on the basis of ethnicity. Moreover, race grouping is slowly submerging into ethnic grouping with Black activism being the role player in this (Blu, 1979). The following is a summary of the aforementioned article in how it relates to racial and ethnic groups and response regarding its views.
Society is defined as people who live in a specific geographic territory, interact with one another, and share many elements of common culture. Within a society there are many components that make up that society. There is crime, culture, social class, gender, marriage and the family, religion, education, medicine and health care, the political order, etc. However, race and ethnicity has a great and powerful influence in society, and has for many years. On the reverse side, society also influences the different races and ethnicities of people. Race is defined as “a group of people who have been singled out on the basis of real or alleged physical characteristics” (Curry, Jiobu, Schwirian 209). Ethnicity is defined as “common cultural characteristics
Numerous events have occurred in the past that have led to the discrimination and marginalization of various populations of the world. Religion, education, war and other socio-cultural aspects of society have led to the development of perceptions and stereotypes against various world communities. The world over, for example, developed a negative attitude towards the Muslim community after the numerous terrorist attacks that had been plotted and accomplished in the name of the Islam religion. Every society in the world has developed a specific stereotype towards a specific individual, community or other social and cultural aspects of life, and this has always had a precise reason or cause. Historical injustices that continue to haunt the world even today have been instigated due to a number of reasons back then.
When individuals first encounter one another, the first thing noticed is not their intellect or poise, but it is the color of person’s skin that is seen first. At that point, assumptions are made based upon their race and ethnicity, which ultimately guides interaction. The stereotypes of blacks have not diminished, but have significantly heightened by the media depicting black individuals as obnoxious and ignorant. Many people may argue that affirmative action is no longer needed because African Americans are now on a leveled playing field; however, if women are only worth seventy-seven cents to a dollar, what makes individuals think that blacks, who were once considered three-fifths of a person, are treated any better? Regardless of socioeconomic

America has had discrimination against minorities for a long time and it will continue to have it until people treat minorities with respect. Discrimination is when people treat minorities bad because of their skin color, ethnicity and the place they were born. For immigrants, the problems they had to arrive in America were not a good experience only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the population. Most immigrants came to the U.S. to have a better life and give education to their children. Almost all immigrants have experienced discrimination at some point in their life and even some are still experiencing it today. Most Latinos don’t have a choice but to deal with it when they get discriminated because they know they are illegal.
According to minorities today, racism and discrimination are some of the major factors that are present in the workplace. In the labor force specifically, we see racism, discrimination, and inequality that deprive minorities of the opportunity to succeed in life. Research shows that African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, women, lesbians, gays, and transgenders in the world suffer injustices that shouldn’t be taking place according to laws that were placed to defend these groups. According to the research, minorities in the labor force are not getting their due because they are treated unequally, face discrimination and their employers violate their rights.
Racial discrimination, a constant treatment where the occurrence never lightens. Where simple acts of defiance, even kindness, are taking towards unnecessary measures. There is no safe zone, not even in the comfort of your own work field, the reason being discrimination happens everywhere and it is not avoidable. Many years can go by, and many things can change, things such as appearances or customs, even alliances, but racism will never be one of them.
