An athletic director usually will not watch a team practice or watch them in the weight room, so for the administrator to find out about a situation like this, the player’s teammates probably went to the athletic director with their complaints. If there is a student-athlete in the athletic department that is causing tension with her teammates because she is late to practice, misses class, and does not do the right things, the administrator should first call the coach in for a meeting and ask what he or she is doing to address the situation. If the coach says that they have met with this athlete and addressed her missing class and being late to practice, then the athletic director should ask why she is continuing to do the wrong things and if the coach was going to punish her. If the coach says that they have not addressed these issues with the athlete, then …show more content…
A coach should be a role model for their players and someone they can look up to for guidance and to tell them when they do something wrong. The two ways to do this are by treating the team with respect by not treating one player better than the next and by holding each athlete accountable for their actions when they break the rules (Mac, 2013). It would seem as an administrator that this coach is not holding all of their players accountable for their actions since Britney continues to start even though she is late to practice and misses class. The athletic director should also tell the coach he or she needs to do a better job of teaching all their athletes to make positive choices in their life and to support each and every one of their teammates (Stankovich, 2014). Teammates do not have to be best friends and hang out all the time, but they need to know that their teammate will have their back during a game and Britney is showing her teammates that they cannot count on
As an athletic trainer my job and duty is to protect and treat the athletes. Make sure they are safe to play in the games preventing injury and if injury occurs to help them heal and keep back to the sport. If an athlete came and told me and said that, we would sit down together and talk about all the consequences that can occur from what he did in the past and how it can and will affect him now. Just because it was in the past doesn’t mean there aren’t still consequences. In this instance I can see two decisions, tell the coach or not tell the coach. If I tell the coach it could cost them the chance of winning state and the...
The behaviors of the athletic management staff can affect the team performance and temperance. This has been evident in the case scandal of the Baylor university basketball team. However, there is a great need for those in leadership of the universities to evaluate constantly the behaviors of the staff concerned with various games in the school. This will make such cases to be evaded and when problems occur, they can be timely handled.
College athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. These athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are these athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are very vulnerable to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. The problem with this is that the athletes are not only getting themselves in trouble but their athletic departments as well.
The failure of the NFL to disclose credible research linking concussions to permanent, hidden long-term brain injury to the players can be interpreted as both ethical and unethical. Ethical theories and traps influenced the NFL’s decision. Not disclosing the research is considered moral by the ethical theory of utilitarianism. Utilitarian ethics considers the best decision is one which maximizes overall happiness and minimizes overall pain is more ethical. Utilitarianism’s goal is to produce the best outcome for the largest number of people. The NFL’s failure to reveal the research connecting concussion to permanent brain injury’s is in line with utilitarian ethics. A larger population benefits from football compared to the small number of
It is not that rare to see a coach in any sport with high expectation for their players. In all sports, there are many coaches are motivated topush their players to their limits to win a championship. Sometimes though, a coach’s fervent passion for success may cause them to lose sight of proper ethical behavior towards their players and the players’ parents. Recently, Mike Rice, former basketball coach for Rutgers University, was fired for abusive behavior towards his players. While accounts state that he was just trying to “bring the best out of his players”, the reports assert that Rice constantly tormented his players by throwing basketballs at their heads, using vulgar language, and insulting them. Although a coach’s main role is to help
The world of Sport Management encompasses many elements. Often the best way to figure out what element is the best fit is to try a little bit of everything. Enter Taylor Kielpinski-Rogers. In Taylor’s time at UConn, she pursued a variety of opportunities. She was a Sport Management major, taking classes such as Sport Law, Sport in Society, Sport Communication, and more. She was an administrative assistant for the men’s basketball program for three years, doing things such as coordinating travel arrangements, preparing necessary documents, giving campus tours to recruits, and more. She also was on the cheerleading team for all four years, cheering for football and basketball. She was named captain senior year, calling that “really exciting” and a “great honor.” And for the games she was not cheerleading, she
Ethical behavior is one of the most important aspects in every day life. People who use ethical behavior usually gain the trust and confidence among their peers. In sports management for example, when a manager of a team uses an ethical judgment or has set rules on ethical behavior they usually sets up their team to have the same judgment. The media thrives off of athletes who do not make ethical decisions such as Tom Brady and the Deflate Gate. Morally deflating footballs to have an advantage when throwing a ball was seen as being unethical as it essentially affected the way Brady handled and threw the ball. The media took this decision that was made by Brady and ran with it as it made front-page headlines all summer. Brady is a great player
Sponsorships have been a common element of high school sports for decades. This partnership allows for the funding of stadiums, locker rooms, and jerseys; therefore, benefiting the overall sports experience. By integrating corporate ads into other academic vicinities such as the library and cafeteria, the motivations of the partnerships become unclear. By implementing an academic environment free from ads and corporate influence, the capability for students to develop their own ideologies and opinions is protected and encouraged.
She was driven by something greater than trying to establish a winning tradition at Tennessee; it was trying to please her father. Summitt knew nothing but to work hard, and when she grew tired, she only worked harder. The player’s that came through Tennessee changed the way Summitt coached; in the beginning, young Summitt was trying to establish authority and credibility so she became shut off from her team. Older Summitt realized that she needed to connect with the players on an emotional level, so they would trust her judgement and coaching ability. There is no doubt that Summitt established authority and credibility, she has changed women’s basketball for the better. Summitt’s career is not defined by statistics or records, but by the impact she made on her players, other coaches, and basketball fans around the world. Pat Summitt’s impact on women’s basketball is a tough resume to match, and there is no equal to a woman of her
In an interview on the Mike Lupica’s radio show Kentucky’s head basketball coach John Calipari said, "All I can tell you is this: if it happens on your campus, and it happens with your assistants and those people, you probably have a pretty good idea of what's going on.” He also says, "If it happens back in their hometown, it happens back with their family or other ways, there's no way you can know. You just don't know. So all I would say is most coaches have an idea if it happened on their campus. You might not be the first to know about it, but you eventually hear about it.” This statement shows how much they really do know about athletes’ actions. If they don’t say anything about what’s going on but they know, that should cause some serious punishment for both school and
When the social science of game developed as a sub-teach in the fields of sociology and physical training throughout the 1960s, race and racial relations pulled in immediate attention from researchers and social activists. Two researchers’ publications in the early 1960s focused on the sociological progress underlying the integration of professional baseball; however the most provocative discussions of race and game were distributed in the late 1960s and early 1970s by sociologist-dissident Harry Edwards, coordinator of the boycott by black U.S. athletes of the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City. Edwards' book, The Revolt of the black Athlete, published in 1969, obviously depicted the prohibition and abuse of blacks in games and challenged popular suspicions that games were free of prejudice and provided African Americans with chances for upward social versatility and social acceptance in the public arena at large. Edwards' work was complimented by the composition of other researcher activists and created further in his Human science of Sport (1973), the first textbook in the field. Edwards (1971) likewise was the most noticeable humanist to scrutinize a widely-read article in Sports Illustrated, a real week by week sport magazine, in which a sports writer contended that blacks were physiologically better than whites and that the victory of blacks in specific sports was due their natural abilities as athletes.
Imagine you are a football player on the field or you are standing on the bleachers. One game you feel confident because you are the one standing tall. If you are in the field and you are the only one standing, what would you do or say? If you are on the bleachers standing tall and you saw one of the football players kneeling what would you think? Studies have shown that this has happened way too often. Therefore, people shouldn’t be able to kneel during the national anthem.
Football coach have a lot of duty's like deciding the the direction of the team and determining the best way to win games. A coach should never put down on his player,he should encourage them to do better. Coaching is a job with low-stress levels most head coaches are former football players. “To work as a high school strength and conditioning coach, most school districts mandate that the applicant have a valid teaching license or substitute teaching license in that state” (Strength-Conditioning Coach). Head coaches are responsible for teaching the players good sportsmanship because if they don't teach the players good sportsmanship the play will get ejected for three quarters and the head coach will have to face the consequences. All coaches want to see their players play to the best of their abilities. During the offseason coach have to set up a weight lifting program so that their players can work out year round so when the season come around again the team will be ready to play and they would have got stronger and
In my opinion I do believe athletes, whether college or pro, are treated differently. I say this because, most of the time when an athlete has broken the law, people treat it as an “example” or even a lesson that needs/needed to be learned. To support that, the people that have the money and attorneys, are the people who are able to make their mistakes disappear. Having done some research, I came across a few articles stating the top 15 athletes that got away with crimes, which include some of the following; vehicular manslaughter, rape, homicide, and drugs.
Consider how important the coaching staff is for a professional sports team. Often, when the team is not performing optimally, it’s not the players that are getting the brunt of the flack, but it’s the coaching staff. The decisions that they make when it comes to plays, which players are going to be put in the game, clock management, and everything else goes under intense scrutiny. That’s because the art of coaching is vital to winning in sports, but it’s also vital for professional growth.
