Ethical Dilemma #3: Privacy
Donor privacy is an important issue that is addressed on a continual basis within the fundraising profession. With the Internet providing a wealth of information about a donor in today’s age it is important to ask the question what essential and nonessential information is needed in order for fundraising professionals to do their job?
“Privacy- Organizations should neither obtain nor retain nonessential and highly personal information about donors in their paper or electronic files. Also, care must be taken to assure that development staff members do not take information about donors with them when they change jobs. Within our book, General Issues in Business Ethics, the author talks about situation ethics, and judgment calls. “Take into careful account the particularity of the persons and circumstances involved” (Donaldson & Werhane, 2008, p.72). Knowing that I can share donor information with my colleagues versus an individual outside of my department is a judgment call, which is one of the six dimensions in Aristotle’s virtue ethics. I need to know who I can and cannot disclose information too.
Ethical Dilemma #4: Stewardship Stewardship is what all individuals who give worry about. Unfortunately, there are many companies out there who do not use their donations they receive in the way they say they will. “Stewardship - Nonprofits must assure the public that the funds the organization raises are indeed being used for the purposes for which they were given. Non-profits must honor the spirit as well as the letter of donor intentions” (Burchill, 2010, p.2).
Fundraisers have a legal as well as a moral obligation to steward the donor and the gift that have been entrusted to them. Donors’ expectations are similar to what any individual would expect from investment

The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater expectation of its role in society is causing executives to look to more scientific methods of management.
For example, since they are not organized to pursue profits, nonprofits are more worthy of trust and therefore more reliable. Moreover, nonprofit comprise vast and growing sector of the national economy, and they are a vital partner with government to provide a wide range of social and human services. The American public will continue to value and support the nonprofit sector as long as it satisfies recognized needs not addressed by government or the for-profit sector. During the years, nonprofits sector provided historically valued services that public and private sectors failed to provide, and promoted new ideas, theories and policies to society. And finally, effective and appropriate use of technology is critical to maintaining a nonprofit organization 's accountability and relevance. A nonprofit should manage information with regard for confidentiality, safety, accuracy, integrity, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and legal compliance. Out of all the duties of a nurse, one of the most important duties is how the nurse honors the trust of a patient by maintaining the patient’s privacy and safeguarding the patient’s information confidentially. When we mention the word ‘privacy’, we mean that there is something very personal about ourselves. Something that we think others are not supposed to know, or, we do not want them to. Nevertheless, why is it so? Why are people so reluctant to let others know about them entirely? This is because either they are afraid of people doing them harm or they are scared that people may treat them differently after their secrets are known. Without privacy, the democratic system that we know would not exist. Privacy is one of the fundamental values on which our country was established. Moreover, with the internet gaining such popularity, privacy has become a thing of the past. People have come to accept that strangers can view personal information about them on social networking sites such as Facebook, and companies and the government are constantly viewing a person’s activity online for a variety of reasons. From sending email, applying for a job, or even using the telephone, Americans right to privacy is in danger. Personal and professional information is being stored, link, transferred, shared, and even sold. Various websites, the government and its agencies, and hospitals are infringing our privacy without our permission or knowledge.
In today’s society with the blogs, the gossip sites and the other forms of social media, confidentiality is a thing of the past. However, for, physicians and other health professionals, they are held to a higher standard to maintain a level of ethics and confidentiality for their patients. Confidentiality is a major duty for a health professional, but is there ever a time to where it is okay to tell what a patient says in confident? What if the patient is a minor, or a senior citizen or someone who is mentally challenged? What if a patient is being abused or wants to commit suicide? Does it matter if it is a nurse, or a dentist, or a psychologist or is all medical professional held to the same moral standard? What roles does a consent form or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act plays in the medical world in being confidentiality? I would like to explore Confidentiality and the moral effects it has on the health profession.

For those who lack healthy organs, organ donations can save their life. Although there’s a tight spot, there is a shortage of much needed organs; the Mayo Clinic notes, “More than 101,000 people are waiting today for transplant surgeries.” The clinic goes on to state that while daily, 77 people receive organ transplants, nineteen die waiting for a transplant. Those waiting for transplants could likely be saved with a larger pool for organ donation. The evolution of the Internet started from the department of defense's project, and rapidly distributed to world wide. With the rise of the Internet age comes with the benefits and the concerns. Because of the easeness to communicate information and displaying data, the first amendment needs to be applied to this communication channel. How are we using and communicating information without offending and harm others? Since the evolution of the Internet, there has been acts from Congress to regulate the use the Internet such as the Communications Decency Act in 1996 and the Child Online Protection Act in 1998. These acts aim to forbid Internet users from displaying offensive speech to users or exposing children of indecent materials. The Internet raises other issues that people might have. The biggest and most debatable topic is the privacy issue. Is the Internet a safe place to protect personal information such as financial information, medical data, etc…? Some people who are computer literate or at least with some experience in software and technology would not trust to release the information on the web or at random sites . As a matter of fact, any unknown or small vendor on the web would have difficulty getting many customers to do business online. Big vendors such as Amazon would want to secure their network infrastructure to protect the users information, so that their server would not be hacked. However, even this style of protecting personal information is not enough. The users demand further protection such as ensuring their information is not being sold to other vendors for misuse, or spam the users mailbox with soliticing.
In the United States, there are over one hundred thousand people on the waiting list to receive a life-saving organ donation, yet only one out of four will ever receive that precious gift (Statistics & Facts, n.d.). The demand for organ donation has consistently exceeded supply, and the gap between the number of recipients on the waiting list and the number of donors has increased by 110% in the last ten years (O'Reilly, 2009). As a result, some propose radical new ideas to meet these demands, including the selling of human organs. Financial compensation for organs, which is illegal in the United States, is considered repugnant to many. The solution to this ethical dilemma isn’t found in a wallet; there are other alternatives available to increase the number of donated organs which would be morally and ethically acceptable.
The privacy of the individual is the most important right. Without privacy, the democratic system that we know would not exist. Privacy is one of the fundamental values on which our country was founded. There are exceptions to privacy rights that are created by the need for defense and security.
