On average a high school class period is forty-five to sixty minutes long. Ensuring that students receive the most education out of this short amount of time is essential to their academic success. To do this, it is necessary to understand and be able to apply the essential elements of instruction. According to educational researcher Barak Rosenshine, there are six essential elements of explicit instruction; Review, presentation, guided practice, correction/feedback, independent practice, and regular reviews.

The first step in successful instruction is a review of previous lessons. This review should include knowledge that is relevant to the new skill. Reviewing previous material verifies that all students have mastered the skills that they …show more content…

During this step the students are given several problems/tasks similar to the ones presented in the earlier models. This unprompted practice section should be monitored initially by the teacher to give feedback and corrections if necessary. This practice continues until the skill is automatic. This step demonstrates that the students have an understanding of the concept as well as high rates of accuracy.

The fifth and final essential element of instruction is regular reviews. At the end of the lesson, the teacher can give a quick synopsis of what was learned, preview what is to be learned next, and to assign independent work if appropriate. It is necessary to then review the learned skill on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure that the skill is still fresh and relevant. If the skill is kept in practice it will be easier for the students to recall the information at a later time and therefore, cut down on time needed for the initial review.

These six essential elements of instruction are key to students learning and retaining important concepts for their education. The teacher has the responsibility to know these components and how to implement them
