On average a high school class period is forty-five to sixty minutes long. Ensuring that students receive the most education out of this short amount of time is essential to their academic success. To do this, it is necessary to understand and be able to apply the essential elements of instruction. According to educational researcher Barak Rosenshine, there are six essential elements of explicit instruction; Review, presentation, guided practice, correction/feedback, independent practice, and regular reviews.
The first step in successful instruction is a review of previous lessons. This review should include knowledge that is relevant to the new skill. Reviewing previous material verifies that all students have mastered the skills that they

During this step the students are given several problems/tasks similar to the ones presented in the earlier models. This unprompted practice section should be monitored initially by the teacher to give feedback and corrections if necessary. This practice continues until the skill is automatic. This step demonstrates that the students have an understanding of the concept as well as high rates of accuracy.
The fifth and final essential element of instruction is regular reviews. At the end of the lesson, the teacher can give a quick synopsis of what was learned, preview what is to be learned next, and to assign independent work if appropriate. It is necessary to then review the learned skill on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure that the skill is still fresh and relevant. If the skill is kept in practice it will be easier for the students to recall the information at a later time and therefore, cut down on time needed for the initial review.
These six essential elements of instruction are key to students learning and retaining important concepts for their education. The teacher has the responsibility to know these components and how to implement them
In “The Essentials of a Good Education” by Diane Ravitch, she states that students are not getting a full curriculum because schools are focusing too much on the subjects the government has mandated. Since public schools are insistent on maintaining good test scores from their students, they taking more time for practice tests and are making cuts to other classes or departments they feel are less necessary to the students’ education, but in reality make them well-rounded students and future citizens. The No Child Left Behind law and the Race to the Top program have caused schools to obsess over test scores and data instead of keeping an advanced curriculum for their students. Guided practice is central to effective instruction to prepare students for fluency and maintenance of independent performance. Monitor guided practice activities to adjust for student needs and varying performance levels. Practice skills that go beyond simple acquisition of handraising. Gradually turn over control to the students so that they may develop self-regulation and move into the internalization setting. When teachers implement guided practice it provides feedback on instruction. If students are meeting learning objectives, new skills are taught. If students are having difficulty, relevant features are retaught and additional practice opportunities are provided. “Without this practice and use, the brain will prune this information, which it views as irrelevant. The learning goal will be monitored during this lesson through the use of informal assessments such as direct observation, responses to direct questions, show of thumbs up for understanding and down for not understanding, and completion of a related worksheet. Every instructor should recognize the importance of student performance in the learning process. Early in a lesson that is to include demonstration and performance, the instructor should identify the most important learning outcomes. Next, explain and demonstrate the steps involved in performing the skill being taught. Then, allow students time to practice each step, so they can increase their ability to perform the skill.
First, I would look at any IEP’s that I have in my class. After looking at the different IEP’s and what accommodations are needed I would look at differentiating the lesson. There are multiple learning strategies and as a teacher I will use a variety of different instructional strategies. Differentiating my instruction will include whole group instruction, small group instruction, independent work, and in pairs. Using a variety of instruction techniques will allow me to meet the needs of the wide variety of skills and abilities.
Breaking down tasks into smaller, easier steps can be an effective way to teach a classroom of students with a variety of skills and needs. The peer review helped with much of the disillusionment. I had not thought about addressing children with different learning styles, or seating arrangements. The teacher would have to plan everything. Much of my revision featured procedures for transitioning between different activities, and how students would get into or disassemble from groups. Besides, having knowledge of different learning styles can help students learn about themselves and increase efficiency while studying. Writing skills learned in college are also a powerful tool for both academic and career success. The campus is a great place to find tools to succeed and achieve continued academic success. It is also important to keep academic honesty as a good habit and as a value of integrity throughout college and later on in the professional environment.
