. Professional female athletes have been getting paid less to do the same job as professional male athletes do. They should get paid the same amount as the men that play the same sport as them at the same level. Women athletes should be paid the same amount as the male athletes that play sports for any country.
The U.S. Women’s soccer team made $33 million less in the 2015 World Cup than the Germany’s Men’s soccer team did when they won the 2014 World Cup; “U.S. team would turn from the international governing body of soccer, FIFA, ...”(Mertens) “Last year, Germany, the winner of the men’s World Cup, took home $35 million.” (Mertens). The U.S. Women’s team and Germany’s Men’s team should of made the same amount because they both won their World Cup. They both had to go through many games, and rounds to get to the top. Both of them worked just as hard as the other to win the World Cup. Yeah, one team is male and one is female but why should that

Compare that team cap to men's Major League Soccer, which has a ceiling of more than $3 million, about 11 times more. The average MLS player makes $305,809 annually, according to sports analytics site sportingintelligence.” (Pramuk). If a male and a female has the same job as professional soccer athletes and goes through training which is similar to each other, they should get paid the same amount. There should be no pay gap between the male professional soccer players and professional female soccer players. They both travel to play games, they both participate in the World Cup that happens every 4 years, they both train hard, they both play their hardest on the soccer fields, etc. They do very similar things in their jobs so there should not be a pay difference between the genders in the same
Traditionally men have dominated the world of sports however in recent year’s women’s sports have become popular and with their new found popularity, women’s sports have evolved into marketable leagues of their own. Although women’s sports took a huge leap forward, women players still don’t receive the same financial compensation for playing the same sports in the same arenas as their male counterparts. In Purse Snatching by Donna Lopiano, she points out sexism may have a huge effect on this financial discrepancy between women and men athletes. Analyzing sports economics may point to a different reason why women are receiving such a compensation disparity.
A good example where women get paid much less money for the same sport is a WNBA. The Women’s Sports Foundation says that players from the WNBA in the 2015 season, the minimum salary was $38,913, the maximum salary was $109,500, and the team salary cap in 2012 was $878,000. For NBA players in the 2015-2016 season, the minimum salary is $525,093, the maximum salary is $16.407 million, and the team salary cap is an all-time high of $70 million. David Berri’s article on, “Basketball’s gender wage is even worse than you think,” talks about that in 2013-14, when the Phoenix Suns employed Dionte Christmas for 198 minutes. For those minutes–the only minutes Christmas has ever played in the National Basketball Association–he was paid the league minimum of $490,180.
At the peak, female players and sports has little publicity and smaller crowds. The general public has little to no desire to partake in female sports. This isn’t about equality. It’s about what people want to see and they want to see all-male teams perform at the highest level.Teams would struggle to coexist with women in the same organisation. For example, they would have to invest in private changing and shower areas. Small team organizations couldn’t maintain sufficient funds to accommodate this. Take into consideration, at the professional level where players usually earn millions every year with extensive contracts, females might have to take a leave of absence from 9 months to however long to raise and care to a new-born. Which is normally the length of a season or long enough to cause a big impact in their careers. In female sports there would be other female players to cover another for maternity leave, but if it were mixed up with male sports, over time general managers would start to sign extensive contracts to males and short ones to females due to longevity of careers. Taking in all the aspects about biology, economy, and desire into perspective there’s no validating reason why any team consisting of men and women would be better off than having separate teams. It would fulfill the much seeked out desire for equal rights, but we must not ignore the basic deviations that make women and men so
Messner, showed that women’s sports took up only 6.3% of airtime while men’s took up 91.4 %.(1989,2004,p.4). And the hit show Sportscenter was showing men more than women at an astounding ratio of 20:1 (Messner, 1989, 2004, p.4). Also the coverage and the after game interviews are far less than men. They don’t get enough exposure showcase the talent and entertainment of a women’s game. If a man is highly masculine and highly skilled at what he is doing, he gains that respect and popularity so easily without really doing a thing. For men this brings money, merchandise, media coverage, and fans. More fans means more and more money. Which conclusively brings more success to the franchise, and that’s one example why male professional sports overpower female. Women have an extreme disadvantage when it comes to this because they are not popular in means of sporting events, they don’t have as many fans, don’t have a lot of people to buy the merchandise, and they don’t have the money to treat you with a higher salary. You don’t see contracts in the WNBA like you do in the NBA, for example the salary cap for each team in the WNBA is $878,000, while the NBA is $58 million. (Garland, 2012). That is a huge difference for playing the same sport in the same country. This also goes hand in hand with endorsements. Men make millions and millions extra from endorsements which women don’t usually get. For example, LeBron James at 18 years old signed a deal with NIKE for $90,000,000 just because he was good at basketball, Nike is lucky LeBron wasn’t a bust, but you would never see a company risk that type of money with a female athlete that young. Women in sports demand quality assurance for their hard work. Sad to say this is not implemented in the sports “world” of women. “One of the theories behind this is that society doesn’t like to see women in roles that go against the norm of what a woman “should be” (Rodriguez).” Fortunately this stems from ignorance and prejudice beliefs. Especially through the media, both of which can be learned. The media can alter sports viewer’s opinions by relaying positive messages toward women’s sports. As well as sports authoritators distributing equal pay for equal work. The abundant amount of support that the media and viewers allocate will allow a higher amount of equality for women in the sports industry. This kind of support will lead women in sports salaries rise and eventually match the hardship of achievements as a minority in today’s sports
The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) is a major asset for the United States. Competition for this team is one like no other. The team has competed in countless World Cups, CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), and Olympic Matches, most recently in 2015, winning the Women’s World Cup, bringing the Gold back to the States. Over the span of a decade, the USWNT has gained considerable popularity among young women. Unlike the women’s players, the men’s soccer players (MNT) are compensated whether they win or not.
Recently a major issue for women in sports is female coaches and their salaries. The salaries of the male coaches in athletics have continuously been on the rise. And on top of that, the male coaches make 159% of the money that female coaches make. Female participation in College athletics are also on the rise. However, the majority of funding in colleges goes into the men's athletic programs.
In summary, Despite opponents argue, fans want to see thunderous dunks and incredible athleticism over the lesser abilities of females, male competitions is more intense and there is more at risk, and male driven associations produce more revenue than female driven associations. It is apparent that male and females are built differently therefore they have different abilities, females go through the same types of events and often have more on the line, and female athletics aren 't given the same recognition or praise. Then, maybe one day female will receive the same amount of pay as their male counterparts. As, Vera Nazarian once implied, “A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.”
Now why should sports women receive equal pay has males do? They should receive that same pay because gender equality these day are growing stronger and they are hard works. In tennis, females play 3 sets in the Grand final where the male counterparts play 5 set give or take 1 set in the Grand final. When watching the females play tennis in the Grand final their games are not that interesting where on the other hand the males make their games more interesting to watch.
Professional sports teams provide much wanted entertainment for the world, earning more income than an average household. Each sport has a different pay structure based on revenues and goals. However, there are similarities in terms of inequality of pay between genders. Since 1972, education has had to offer equal opportunity to women and men in all programs. Title IX requires all schools that receive federal funds to maintain equal support and opportunity to all students not based on gender (Education).
The top five women are guaranteed only $72,000 each year”(1). This shows even though women and men are playing the same minimum amount of games, men are still much paid much better. The range from women's top five to men's top five in unacceptable. All ten of these players are putting in tremendous amounts of work, meanwhile only half of them are being properly compensated. Additionally Carli Lloyd explained, “If I were a male soccer player who won a World Cup for the United States, my bonus would be $390,000.
Women are also struggling with equal pay for getting college scholarships and or professional sports. Male college athletes receive 36% more college scholarship dollars than female college athletes. This means they receive 176 million more scholarship dollars than female athletes every year. The United States women's national soccer team earn as little as 40% of what the men’s national team made (even after they went to the team’s third World Cup championship). Goalkeeper Hope Solo says, “The numbers speak for themselves.
Male athletes often play in sell out arenas and stadiums, rake in money by the millions, and are shown on television and other major media platforms countless times after a game or for promotion. On the other hand, female athletes don’t get the same benefits male athletes do. Female athletes often are facing lower amenities in the facilities in which they play games and practice at, significantly less media coverage, and also make significantly less money than male athletes.
For example, in tennis men use to get more prize women the a women this recently changed in 2007. In the world cup women have came along way even more than men. Women have won a lot more games than men but, women still gets lss pay. Each women on the on the USMNT (united states soccer team) gets 99,000 a year if the team wins 20 exhibition matches on the other hand on the male soccer team they get paid $263,320 each even if they lose a match this still have not
The question can be asked why are men sports so much more popular than women sports? When people think of sports, people mostly think of things like the MLB, NFL, NHL, and MBA. But people do not think of leagues like National Professional Fastpitch, the WNBA, and the Nation Women Soccer League. Women have their own leagues but nowhere compare to the pay or anything else. In the MLB the average salary can be $545,000 (ESPN).
