Comparisons between Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina
Introduction
Natural disasters are unfortunate occurrences that happen in our world during unexpected times. Some examples of natural disasters include: drought, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes. These events can lead to very catastrophic consequences and devastating loss of homes, jobs or worse, lives of many people. Accidents are the main cause of natural disasters but unfortunately, some natural disasters are caused by human activities too. According to Anthony Penna and Jennifer Rivers, authors of Natural Disasters in a Global Environment, even though our society, as a whole, have greatly improved in giving out warnings and responding to natural disasters, our structured and effective ways of emergency management may give us a sense of false security (1). These natural disasters occur around the world all the time¬–some of them may be more devastating and have more casualties compared to others. In the United States, a great number of natural disasters have occurred. In recent times, two of the most notable hurricanes made a landfall in the United States in 2005 and 2012. These hurricanes were Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. Both Hurricane Katrina and Sandy are among the deadliest and the costliest hurricanes to ever make a landfall in the Unites States.
