Zappos’ security of online transactions The Internet has revolutionized the way of our life and business. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) paved the way for ecommerce (electronic commerce) by replacing mailing and faxing documents in digital data from one computer to another (Merchant, 2011). According to Merchant’s (2011) article, “Michael Aldrich, an English inventor, innovator and entrepreneur is credited with developing the predecessor to online shopping”. According to Horn (2013), “In the mid-1990s, e-commerce was transformed with the introduction of Amazon and eBay” that lined the way for many. By definition E-Commerce, “refers to the purchase and sale of goods and/or services via electronic channels, such as the Internet. Online retail is convenient due to its 24-hour availability, global reach and ease of customer service” (Horn, 2013). The creator of Zappos, Nick Swinmurn, created “the website that offered the best selection in shoes in terms of brands, styles colors, sizes, and widths” (Zappos, 2005). Swinmurn created the website for people to buy from the company “with best service and the best selection” (Zappos, 2005). Zappos’ business relies on online purchasing from their customers. It is this reason efficiency is an online transaction issue. Misuse of time, information overload decreases (Habermas, 2011) efficiency because temps (customer service employees) may have unclear duties and responsibility that may lead to excuses thus dishonesty will be the first excuse used. Most of the time when employees are overwhelmed with work at Zappos its most likely he or she will make excuses that dishonesty will arise in all companies especially when new to company. Dishonesty not only is an excuse when employees are overwhelmed with work, but also when stealing information from clients for their personal gain. When these employees have their own agendas to fulfill in other words employees are trying to multitask and missing important details that are needed to concentrate on important tasks.
