Essay On Western Empires And Imperialism

2226 Words5 Pages

The period of formal Western empires and imperialism involved industrialized countries having complete rule over developing countries and territories. With the decolonization of the remaining colonies in Asia and Africa during the 20th century, the developing countries were given complete independence from Western states. This could not be farther from the truth. The recently freed countries were still influenced by external entities. The third world countries were still under developed western nations control, but more in the form of international monetary institutions and big business than an actual country. Today, most countries in the world, including the some of the more developed nations, are subservient to the will of corporations and banks. While these corporations do not have physical control over nations, they have shown their influence economically, politically, and even culturally. Empires originated from European exploration in order to gather more resources, increase their power and wealth, and prove how great their nations were. This initial exploration turned into full blown imperialism; a nation’s belief that they need to completely control weaker states for resources, wealth and power for a prolonged period of time. In order to gain control over natives, force was necessary. European nations committed various atrocities to get what they wanted. These atrocities are seen when Western leaders schemed and conned their subjects in order to get the maximum amount of wealth. The common method of operation was coercing natives to hand over their land and people by force and tricks. An example of European trickery is seen in a King Leopold of Belgium’s treaty with a Congolese chief: for "one piece of cloth per month ... ... middle of paper ... ... to keep some part of their culture intact. The only difference is corporations and the monetary institutions changing culture was a side effect of paying back debt and the Western empires changing culture was direct and physical. All throughout history, true equality between all people on Earth has never been seen. This is especially the case for before and after the decolonization of Western empires. During the period of formal Western empires, the Western leaders were in control of the world in all aspects: politically, culturally, and economically. After decolonization, industrialization, and liberalism movements, control over the world shifted more towards international banking entities and corporations. Even though those in control of the world changed, the nations that were once colonies were still impoverished, treated unequally, and not truly independent.
