Vitamin E is the general classification for a group of eight fat-soluble compounds of tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E functions primarily as an antioxidant, but also has other roles in the body [1].
Tocopherols and tocotrienols are two classes of chemical compounds that have vitamin E activity. Vitamin E is made up of four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Each of the compounds appear in alpha- beta- gamma- and delta- forms. The different forms of vitamin E have individual levels of biological activity and can be found in different increments in various foods and supplements [1].
Vitamin E in all its forms, functions predominantly as an antioxidant by protecting cells from free radicals in the body. Vitamin E works as an antioxidant by donating a hydrogen atom from a hydroxyl group to a free radical within the body. Vitamin E also plays a role in immune system function and protects cell membranes and regulation of gene expression. Vitamin E has been studied to uncover other medical usages, including prevention or treatment of many health conditions [1].
Vitamin E can be found in foods and dietary supplements. Natural vitamin E from food sources is called d-alpha-tocopherol. The dietary supplement for is dl-alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E can be found in wheat germ, some nuts, seeds and oils and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E appears in many fortified cereals as well. Wheat germ provides the highest concentration of vitamin E with sunflower seeds taking second place. One tablespoon of wheat germ oil provides one hundred percent of an adult’s RDI for vitamin E.
