In the play, Macbeth, Shakespeare begins with three Witches prophesying the future of Macbeth and Banquo. The prophecies later become motivating factors for Macbeth to pursue his “fate” and to murder others that interfere. Once he kills King Duncan and is crowned the King of Scotland, and can easily commit other atrocities. As the play develops, it is evident that the Witches hold a tremendous amount of power over Macbeth and his destiny. Through their manipulating they are able to lead Macbeth to his demise. Shakespeare uses wyrd and the Witches to foreshadow and steer the story, and depict the struggle between the supernatural and natural world.

This first prophecy sets the foundation for the rest of the plot. After Macbeth became the thane of Cawdor, he realizes that the prophecies are true and believe that he would soon become king, and says, “Two truths are told, as happy prologues to the swelling act of the imperial theme” (Shakespeare 20). The prophecy that the Witches gave Macbeth is what leads him to murder King Duncan in Act 2, Scene 2. After Macbeth murders the king, he is crowned the new king but he is paranoid that he would not be able to keep his throne. He says, “To be this is nothing, but to be safely thus. Our fears in Banquo sticks deep, and in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be feared” (Shakespeare 88). Due to this, he orders the deaths of Banquo and Fleance to secure his position. Macbeth’s actions are again influenced by the Three Witches and their prophecies. This further demonstrates the power that the Witches have over Macbeth and his destiny (Shakespeare 102).
