The Paralympics The Paralympics is a non-profit organization involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities. The Paralympics first started in 1952 in Stoke Mandeville, Great Britain with only two countries participating and 130 athletes. Recently in Sochi, Russia they were forty four countries with 502 athletes. With the broad range of disabilities that Paralympic athletes have, there are several sections in which the athletes engage. The acceptable disabilities are broken down into ten categories. The categories are impaired passive range of movement, impaired muscle power, leg length difference, athetosis, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, short stature, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. These categories are then further broken down into divisions, which vary from sport to sport. Even though, Paralympic sports have progressed over time they are still not considered in equality compared to the Olympics due to their lack of funding and broadcasting. It is hard to live with disability, because everyday things become a challenge. U.S. Census Bureau report from 2008 states that 3.3 million non-institutionalized Americans over age 15 years use wheelchairs. The reason why there are so many people with disabilities is that U.S. spent decades at war. This is why mobility industry is rethinking the products it provides to support a growing demographic. The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. My path to becoming a physical therapist starts with a bachelor's degree. This program will cover a lot of science topics, such as anatomy and pharmacology. After I complete a bachelor's degree program, I won't be qualified to work as a physical therapist until I complete the Doctorate degree program. In a Doctorate degree program, I will get to work in clinical situations, participate in internships and gain the necessary skills needed to become a licensed Physical Therapist. The occupation of physical therapy has been around for centuries. Throughout time it has evolved greatly as a medical practice and an area of study. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2012, there were 204,200 physical therapists employed throughout the United States of America.
The World Health Organisation, WHO, (1980) defines disability in the medical model as a physical or mental impairment that restricts participation in an activity that a ‘normal’ human being would partake, due to a lack of ability to perform the task . Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (n.d.) states that the medical model emphasizes that there is a problem regarding the abilities of the individual. They argue that the condition of the disabled persons is solely ‘medical’ and as a result the focus is to cure and provide treatment to disabled people (Michigan Disability Rights Coalition, 2014). In the medical model, issues of disability are dealt with according to defined government structures and policies and are seen as a separate issue from ordinary communal concerns (Emmet, 2005: 69). The Olympic Games. The biggest international sports competition in which the worlds’ best athletes compete from all around the world to win medals for their countries. The Olympics have been a worldwide tradition since the eighth century BC, but it has hardly benefited us as a species. Every time we have the Games, our resources are abused in order to create the Olympics we desire. Huge amounts of money are used to build venues and make medals, only leading up to the countries who host the Games going into debt afterwards. There are only rare cases in which the countries earn money from hosting the Olympics, but most of the time the debt that they get themselves into take years, or even decades to pay off. You might ask yourself, why do we even host the Olympics, if it has these huge disadvantages? The answer is because we want pride for our countries, no matter how temporary it is. Knowing this, we can safely say, that the Olympic Games do not help us grow as a species.
The Paralympic Games is an international competition including participants with a variety of physical and intellectual disabilities. These disabilities include mobility disabilities, blindness, cerebral palsy, and amputations. The Paralympics give a person with disabilities the chance to demonstrate his or her abilities. Not only do the Paralympics benefit disabled people, but also non-disabled people who are observing. In my opinion, the Paralympics are a way for a disabled person to overcome the stereotype that he or she has been defined as. These Games are an opportunity for non-disabled people to see the participants as people and not as disabilities. The first Paralympic Games are dated to 1948, but there were clubs in existence for athletes with disabilities prior to the Paralympics. The idea of the Paralympics is to give people with disabilities a place where they can thrive. Occasionally disabled athletes would compete in the Olympics, but since the Paralympics formed these athletes have a more suitable place to compete.
The Paralympics are games that allow athletes with disabilities to participate in an international competition against athletes with similar or the same disabilities. There are five different disability groups that are registered in the games. There are nineteen different sports, four of which are unique to the Paralympics.
