As I observe my mentor teacher and his classroom environment, I have come to realize the types of characteristics that are being presented from his students. As the students enter the classroom, they hold a privilege to have their homework and binder work ready. There are certain rules in which they have to follow everyday when they step inside the classroom. They have to be attentive to what they are doing and making sure they understand what they are responsible for doing.
Teachers have played a significant role in education system. They are an essential part to develop schools and facilitate students to achieve their outcomes such as the skills of creative thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. According to Stronge (2013), unless we develop the quality of teaching in schools, it will not be successful to increase the high standard of schools and constructively influence the lives of learner. It is worth to point out that teachers occupy the initial position to approach the development of teaching in schools. In other words, teachers signify extremely in related to both school development and student achievement (Stronge, 2013). However, not every teacher could approach these positive changes effectively.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Creating relationships with students and between students can help to establish a positive environment for both teaching and learning. According to Methods for Effective Teaching, “an optimal teacher-student relationship consists of equal parts dominance and cooperation.” Being assertive and persistent will allow students to understand what is expected from them and how to behave. In addition, showing an interest in what the students have to say and encouraging them fosters a feeling of acceptance. A balance between dominance and cooperation is needed in order to be respected and listened to.
Quality of education is directly related to the quality of instruction in the class rooms. The strength of an educational system largely depends upon the quality of teachers. A quality teacher is the central figure for offering the quality education. The teacher has always been considered as a second parent of students. Students are generally influenced by their teachers, because they spend most of their time under the guidance of teachers in schools. For effective teaching learning activities, teacher must do lesson plans, provides instructional materials and adopt appropriate teaching strategies to achieve instructional objectives. For effective learning, a teacher needs to be equipped with all these skills and strategies by which he can help his students learn.
The attainment of quality education is the goal not only of the Department of Education top management but also of the school managers, the teachers and the parents as well. Education stakeholders, particularly teachers, have become critical about quality outcome of education and have continuously demanded for educational reforms.
