Social Isolation May Shorten Your Lifespan As human beings, we are social animals. We need each other to survive and we crave the company of others. Being around others, socializing ,and interacting is a normal part of life. Isolation is not healthy for us mentally, but physically as well. Not too many people know the dangers of isolation, no one really thinks about it, or worry about it , really it would be more helpful if we all knew the dangers of isolation. “ Being isolated and alone can actually cause your health to deteriorate and can significantly shorten your lifespan”. Mental illness was misunderstood in the early 20th century, studies has become more advanced because of the evolution of our technology, we are able to actually observe the brain. Before our time mental disorders were largely misunderstood apparently in women for the most part, common treatments were isolation. In the, “yellow Wallpaper” the main character, Jane, suffered from “nervousness” her husband, which was her doctor diagnosed her with, and prescribed her rest and isolation as a treatment. She really had what we call “postpartum depression” , women are sometimes affected by this when they get attached to their baby and lose their child as an infant (when their baby dies at a young age).
