¨A report shows that fast food restaurants have stricter food standards then the school lunch programs¨(Peter Eisler). Everyday students go to lunch not knowing what the consequences are from eating the food provided for them. Schools have the obligation to provide a healthy lunch for students, they will see the academics improve, it is better for the students health, and the growth of obesity is increasing. Eating a healthy lunch during school will increase the student's academics. Nutrition plays a main factor in seeing a positive change in students academics. ¨Recent studies have demonstrated that nutrition affects students’ thinking skills, behavior and health, all factors that impact academic performance ¨(¨Nutrition¨). The amount of people with obesity has multiplied since the 1970s. ¨the percentage of children with obesity in the united states has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today about one in five school-aged children has obesity¨ (¨Childhood¨). School lunches need to be more healthier to help the rate of obesity, of school-aged kids, decrease. The amount of calories a day a child should consume is about 2,200 calories, which is just about two times larger than an average school lunch. ¨The average school lunch has about 900 calories, which is about half of the amount of total calories a child should consume daily. Many schools attempt to serve healthy lunches for students, but sometimes they are not aware of what ¨healthy¨ is¨ (¨Childhood¨). Schools do not have enough nutrients in their lunches to be known as a healthy lunch. ¨Nutrition is important, it helps our bodies and brains grow and develop into the way that they are supposed to, Schools claim that they offer the nutrients in foods, but according to an online study 15 percent of 13-15 year old girls are obese and 14 percent of 13-15 year old boys are obese and schools can be at blame for that¨ (¨Reduce¨). Schools should take action on making sure that their students get a healthy lunch while at school, and that is free from trans and saturated
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
“More than a third of the county's children are overweight or obese.”(Gustin, 1). As shocking as this is, it's true. One of the big reasons that children and teens are overweight is because of the foods that they eat. They are fed these fattening and unhealthy foods by the school system. Their futures can be changed if we change our choices. Having more nutritious lunches can have a positive impact on the health of American teens.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. The quality of health of the food being served in school lunches is extremely poor and was allowed to decline even more with a new set of rule changes. However, there are some improvements currently being made to increase the quality of health of the food being served to students, including teaching them all about food and its nutritional information, both good and bad. In order for students to eat healthier lunches at school, the USDA needs to implement healthier ...
Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
Whew! Who could ever imagine having fast food options as your school lunch? , many individuals do but also a quantity of them believe fast foods should not be permitted to early young students and teens to consume any fast foods during school lunch . Many health risks are taken which not so many kinds and young adults are aware about , but they’re not blamed for, what really is blamed for is all the advertisements many company’s make to get into people’s heads to consume their food. I believe fast food options for school lunch should never be valid to any student due to risks of many health issues.
We have so many things for our elementary students, but what about our junior highers? Our elementary students have many options to play, have there own area they want to sit at during lunch. Us junior highers don’t have as many choices because we come out later in the day for recess. Us junior highers and I would like more things to have to ourselves. This would make us have a better junior high. Options for a better Junior High recreation area are a Food Cart, Junior High playground, and a private lunch area.
Childhood obesity has increased dramatically in the U.S. over the last several decades. With children being more obese at younger ages, this could cause longer term health issues and academic issues (“School Meals”, 2012). With these programs, students can improve their food choices, body weight, and school performance. Also with these programs, lower income families can get free or discounted meals from schools. Children from families with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty line are eligible for reduced lunches, meaning that they cannot be charged more than 40 cents for a meal (“School Meals”, 2012). Children from families with incomes under 130 percent of the poverty line are eligible for free lunches from schools. Children from families with incomes greater than 185 percent of the poverty line pay full price for their meals, but their meals are still subsidized to some extent. Local schools set their own prices for a full-price meal but must operate their meal services as non-profit programs. Afterschool snacks are provided to children on the same income basis as lunches, but programs that are in areas where at least 50 percent of students get free or reduce lunches, can serve all snacks free (“School Meals”, 2012). An added benefit is that of 2014 school lunches are proved to be healthier than lunches brought from home. This research was done by professor of
One way to improve the futures generations health is to modify school lunches. Middle and high school lunches do not emphasize healthy eating habits. They actually encourage students to pick the unhealthy junk foods rather than the healthy foods. Everyday student rely on the schools to provide breakfast and lunch meals and snacks. It is their responsibility to provide the various options of healthy alternatives to junk food. Most parents are shocked to learn the truth about the unhealthy school lunches that their kids consume fives times a week. Actions need to be taken to help our children. Taking out the greasy fries, triple cheese pizzas, super sodas, and bags on chips can prevent obese among young adults. Also another way to improve health of American children would be to start packing homemade lunches. This will avert children from spending money on junk foods. The children of America spend approximately ten months in schools for twelve years. Modify school lunches will no doubtly help to improve the overall health of
Everybody knows the horror of school lunch. The weird food combinations, the odd smells, finding things in your food that aren’t supposed to be there, it’s all a part of the school experience. However, the one component of school lunch that makes it bearable is having tablemates who you get to experience all of the horrors of what is school, including school lunch. One day they might be eating gross salad while bonding over how hard the math test was, and another day be eating some peculiar chicken nuggets while talking about what you’re going to do over the weekend. Despite all of this, there are serious problems with school lunch.
My argument is something not many people have to deal with, but for some it is a struggle they live with everyday including myself. These people I happen to be talking about are vegans, and how we have very limited lunch options in school, so I am going to put it upon myself to discuss why schools should consider vegan lunches. Doing this would help give everyone an opportunity to have a full meal at lunch, nutrition and health, could possibly increase test scores.
meal a child receives,” (World Food Programme). This all depends on who or what or where these schools buy their food from. “School meals help families to educate their children and protect their food security in times of crisis,” (World Food Programme). Schools providing a good meal a day could make kids want to stay in school and want to learn because that may be the only meal they eat. If students do not a good meal it could cause them to want to go home or not want to learn because they are hungry.
One of my many concerns as a Tarrant County Collage student is the lack of variety and nutrition in the school cafeteria. The choices that we receive here are Subway, or junk out of the vending machines. This issue really struck me when I went to my UTA orientation and discovered the many healthy choices, as well as the variety in their cafeteria. I believe that TCC should have a much broader menu as well as a healthier alternative. How can TCC as an educational facility fail its students in a march to a better lifestyle. A good educational Facility should not only educate but also lead its students to a better healthier tomorrow.
The year is 2010. A then nine year old me stands in line at the cafeteria, waiting to buy a lukewarm chicken patty, and a side of greasy tater tots. The cafeteria is filled with kids whose eyes are glowing. The only thought on their mind is to get back to their seats and socialize. This however, was not the case for me.
One of the main causes of childhood obesity is unhealthy eating habits that children have adapted to. Basically, you can say that a burger has become the new banana. Sugary dinks and the less unhealthy food has become on school grounds. Many children that go to school tend not to eat the school’s lunch because they say it’s nasty, so they go right to the vending machine and get soda and a bag of chips. Since that’s where many children spend most of their daily lives at, that’s where the problem is escalating from.
The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted lunch program held at public schools giving kids who can't afford meals to be able to eat at school. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946. The privilege of getting free lunch is determined by your parent or guardian's financial status
