Samsung and Apple hold the top two spots in the smartphone vendor market worldwide largely due to their flagship phones both paired with the most powerful, yet user friendly mobile operating systems available (Jones, 2016). Samsung released its first Android smartphone in June 2009, however, it was not until the release of the Samsung Galaxy S a year later, that Samsung smartphones could compare to the iPhone. In fact the design of the phones and other Samsung devices were similar enough to spark a patent battle lasting from 2010 to 2015 between the two companies. Not only did this battle create more competition between the companies, it also fueled the competition between consumers. An Advanced RISC Machine or ARM processor is commonly used in smartphones. It is a “32-bit reduced instruction set computing architecture designed for simplicity and low-power applications” (“Computer Structure and Logic”, 2014, p. 26). Smartphones use two different types of storage including the main memory and long-term storage. The common type of main memory is a DDR RAM, and for long-term storage flash memory is the most common. Lithium-ion polymers batteries are used in smartphones because of the ability of the battery to be made in different shapes to fit into different phone designs (“Computer Structure and Logic”, 2014). The standard external ports in a smartphone include a USB port, ⅛-inch audio jack and Micro-USB port. The most important hardware components of a smartphone are usually found soldered directly onto the motherboard, therefore the majority of this paper will focus on the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, WiFi and Bluetooth communications chip, and GSM voice communications and 4G chip.
