Personality is a distinctive pattern of behavior, mannerisms, thoughts, motives, and emotions that characterizes an individual over time and across different situations. Everyone has a different personality and is brought up in different ways. The Psychosexual and Psychosocial stages of personality both have meaning in a person's life and events can set you back from developing the way you should.
The psychosexual stages of development means that personality develops in stages. Each of the stages produce frustration, conflict, and anxiety. A conflict may cause someone to get stuck in one of the eight stages until it gets resolved and sometimes it never does. The Identity vs. Role Confusion is a critical issue for adolescent development. This stage is when you figure out who you are and what you want to be. It often extends into adulthood as a person typically experiments with many behaviors, roles, and identities before the lasting one. My cousin has been going through this lately. She dropped out of college a year ago to take a break. She decided she did not want to go into nursing anymore. She was conflicted on what she wanted to be. She applied to schools for psychology and decided not to go through with that. My cousin does not know if she wants to go back to the university she was at or travel far away. But, instead of looking into different careers she has been working a job at a fast food chain and has no motivation to pick herself up again. The way she can get “unstuck” and resolve this is by letting herself figure herself out. It will come to her and it is okay to take a break. You do not have to know exactly who you are. You just have to have the motivation to work on it and figure out a game plan.
