Recommended: About the criminal justice system

What does it mean to be an American? Between laws, government and citizen rights, what does all that mean. Our criminal justice system was made to protect and serve, but at times we see police brutality and corruption. Our government grants us our rights, but has the ability to take them away. What about our freedom? Are we really free? This essay will touch on a few of these concerning questions. Topics such as, nation of laws, law enforcement and political correctness. These topics will help give a better understanding on questions asked. The United States of America, a nation of laws, not a nation of men. “ A nation of laws means that laws, not people, rule” (Shott 2014). This is a basic meaning that all citizens should be governed by the same laws. Also, that it shouldn 't matter if it 's the President of the United States or even a member of the congress. What exactly is political correctness? Political correctness is the avoidance of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against. Political correctness is often seen on college campuses. Students constantly protest free speech campaign claims (Sleeper 2016). “The protection of criminal rights is one of the main minority groups political correctness has adopted is criminals.”(Jenkins 2007). The reason for this is that citizens don 't necessarily support criminals, they just fear a police state. Political correctness goes beyond condemning outright wrongdoing. It seems as if political correctness protects the bad guys. Also, it suggest that it is wrong to punish a criminal at all. It doesn 't at all seem like political correctness keeps law enforcement in line, more like it lets them off the

Starting in 1791 only two years after the Constitution was ratified the Constitution began to evolve and this process continues to this day. The first ten amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights. This Bill of Rights outlines the protections which citizens have from the government of the United States. The question raised in the title of this paper is; Are the Bill of Rights, written well over 200 years ago still relevant today? Of course they are and probably even more so.
