Eads 1 Jared Eads Mrs. Lawrence English IV 11 February 2014 Pest Control Pest control workers are responsible for getting rid of pests, also known as bugs. They don’t only treat for bugs, they also get rid of small rodents such as mice, rats, squirrels, and even bats. Pest control workers are known as exterminators, or pest control technicians. Pest control technicians treat residential, as well as commercial properties. They treat for: ants, bed bugs, mice, roaches, centipedes, termites, bees, flies, and spiders. Pest control technicians treat homes, hotels, restaurants, food stores, and warehouses. Some pest control technicians work for companies, but others are self-employed. They tend to make more money if they work for themselves, rather than working for a company, but they run a greater risk of having accidents. This is one scenario: If a pest control technician is spraying a home and they happen to break something or tear something up, they will have to pay for the damages. For this reason, they have to be insured and bonded. Though many people view the pest control industry as being a nasty or dirty job, few people know what they actually do. Pest control technicians who are self-employed have clients who have accounts with them. Eads 2 The exterminators will spray certain chemicals to get rid of the bugs. Once the bugs have been disposed of, the pest control technician will return and inspect for any evidence of new activity from more pests. The technicians must keep a record of their clients, and the dates of when they treated their accounts. They should be able to follow oral, as well as written instructions. Pest control technicians should be in good physical condition, because of all the rigorous activities that they have to perform on a daily basis. People who enjoy being outdoors, and don’t mind physical labor, would enjoy a career as a pest control technician. There would be less chance of boredom, since the tasks required for the work vary, and the travel from client to client would break up monotany. An outgoing personality is extremely helpful to someone in the extermination business, as well, as they have extended dealings with the public. The pest control industry is a good choice for outgoing individuals who aren’t afraid of strenuous work, and the field for advancement is good as well.
