Young and unpredictable, Emerging Economies seem to have become key drivers of the 21st century’s global growth and sustainability. With 1.2 billion inhabitants and the 4Th largest economy in the world, India is a major force in the global market. With a growing middle class, improved health conditions, and having seen life expectancy doubled and literacy rates quadrupled, India has enjoyed the highest growth among the BRICs (The World Bank Group).
PEST analysis
Political factors
A former British colony, India acquired its independence in 1947. Often called the world’s most popular democracy, the parliamentary republic with its strong multi-party electoral system (over 200 parties) allows neophyte parties to address a wide range of issues. The democracy still seems to require improvements in consolidating government institutions, curtailing repression and reducing income inequalities. Critics state that corruption jeopardizes Indian democracy, along with poverty and a weak court system (Ghosh, Palash).
Government interference is still relatively high and government contacts are essential to do business in India. Since its openness to the global market and trade liberalization in 1991, India’s labor laws have been pushed to be less restrictive on companies and private capitalists. The nation’s tariffs continue to be high with still restrictive investment norms (The World Bank Group).
Economic factors
With a GDP of $1.842 trillion in 2012, India is one of the fastest growing economies (The World Bank Group). Another determinant of a country’s competiveness level is its exchange rate; the Indian Rupee decreased to 60.92 this March from 62.10 in February 2014 per USD. ...gger demand. This causes a strong probable threat for the Spanish textile and retail industry, and as we saw before in the PEST analysis, innovation is the only weapon to win in the fashion industry.
Substitutes: low pressure
Clothing has a diverse use and mostly not substitutable in the short run.
Rivalry: moderate pressure
The Spanish textile and fashion industry has its good reputation and keeps its loyal customers. However, rivalry from the developing countries, such as China and India, along with rivalry from other European members especially Italy and France pose a big threat on the industry. As we discussed in the PEST analysis, innovation and creation of new ideas is the key to keep successful and establish competitive advantage over the rivals. The quality is a priority, however very careful measures and practices shall be taken to win the rivalry battle.
