When choosing a career it is imperative to assess what is important to you in your personal life, and then decide what career will help achieve those personal goals. Some of the goals I have in my life will change, while others may stay the same. Many of those goals are tied to my career, which also helps draw interest in that particular career, while other goals may clash with that chosen career. The hard part is deciding what is most important, or how to achieve both goals even though it may be difficult. I am twenty-nine years old, and married to a beautiful woman. To gain the needed experience I will have to either work for a regional airline or a part 135charter operation. Currently, I am a first officer for a part 135 on-demand charter operation, building experience towards getting on at a major airline, more specifically Southwest. But, I am now finding out that the schedule constraints involved with being on-call and the reduced amount of flying compared to a regional airline. Regional airlines have recently increased their starting pay drastically to attract more pilots. With the ability to fly 600 to 700 hours a year versus 300 to 400 at a part 135 charter operation, along with having a schedule, the regional airline is looking very appealing. The regional airline is not a career destination, but it allows for a better quality of life while I increase my experience to get hired on by Southwest. The major drawback in a regional carrier is the low pay, but with the recent demand and increased difficulty to find qualified pilots, pay is beginning to increase. A large benefit that a regional carrier provides over a charter airline is the schedule. Having a schedule would allow me to plan time and events with my family and friends, instead of always having to hang by the phone in case the dispatcher calls. Have you ever been in a position where you where stuck and couldn’t decide between two careers? Whether it was something that you love to do or something that pays well? The answer may seem easy to you but when you start comparing the facts; that’s when it gets hard to choose. For many of us, graduates and people around the world have a difficult time choosing a career that can be a confusing process. A lot of people tend to settle down on a career quickly. Unfortunately, choosing a rapid occupation often leads to an unsatisfying path in the future, if not sooner. Eventually the individual decides to quit and start all over again. According to choosingacareer.net, “6% of workers over the age 50 are in the process of changing a career, resumes mailed to companies’ staffing departments only accounts for 3% of hires nationwide, and 95% of human resources managers and 95% of job seekers depend on personal contacts and networking to fill and find openings.” (choosingacareer.net) Choosing a career takes time and research, so it’s better to plan your future than rapidly pick one. Although some people claim they are happy with the career they chose of the bat, choosing a career carefully is much more effective because in the long run you will feel content and appreciate more with the choice you made.
My life experiences thus far bring the best of both worlds to my education and career goals; a student coupled with a variety of life experiences. Being a newly graduated non-traditional student, mother of school-aged children, and experience working with students in the classroom, I bring diversity to your program. Through personal analysis and efforts with other professionals, I have overcome early childhood tragedies. Desiring to make the best use of my experiences by helping others to overcome trauma, and insecure upbringings by conquering these adversities and circumstances positively. Through my example of grit, tenacity, resilience, and perseverance, I hope to offer much to the students in my role as their mentor.
Focusing on pursuing a career you like is important because statistics show fifty-two percent of Americans are unhappy going to work every day because they chose a career they didn’t have an interest in. My ideal job is in the medical field because I’ve always had a passion in helping people. I want to specialize in nurse anesthesia because of the important role they have in society. Nurse anesthesia interests me because of the tasks they do, the advanced education path they must take, and the history behind the profession.
What made the final decision for the career you chose for yourself? Is it something you are passionate about doing? Was it the money? Well what if you could take an assessment test of your skills and see what career would be best for you? You don’t want to be stuck doing a job that you do not enjoy because you thought it paid well. After exploring two very different careers, it was interesting to see what I found. A Business Executive and an art therapist have very little in common.
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill. I wanted to do something unique, something interesting, something that would inspire me to be a better human, something that would make me feel, something that is challenging, something that helped others, and above all, something that was rewarding and made me feel fulfilled.

Not only is making the right choice important for the present, but it is especially important for your future. When choosing a career it is valuable to consider things such as growth potential, monetary benefits, strengths, weaknesses, and your happiness. By doing that it will help clarify the benefits and tradeoffs for each opportunity you are given. That being said, making such a weighted decision that will impact the rest of your life can be nerve-racking, extremely scary, stressful, and outright frustrating. During my school life, I became interested in many different things, from school subjects like geography and science to extracurricular activities like student council and soccer. Although some say that “variety is the spice of life,” it has made it harder for me to decide on what I want to do in the future. Despite this difficulty, I have some simple short-term goals that will hopefully allow me to solidify my long-term aspirations. In the short-term, I hope to be attending a more rigorous college outside of Minnesota in order to gain a new life experience away from my home state.
There are several defining factors that go into choosing a career. You must evaluate your personality, desire for a personal life, and desire for a certain lifestyle. To achieve these goals, there are several steps I have to take.
What is my personal purpose? Is a question that I have never thought to ask myself until recently. Then when I started learning more about a personal purpose I started wondering if I have one and what it was. I never thought of myself has having a real purpose until a watched an interview Will Smith had did and he had said “When your life means something to someone other than yourself than you have a purpose.” That is when I realized that I have a purpose. My purpose is that I am the hug that let others know it is going to be ok. My personal goals is to be genuinely happy with myself and life and to make my parents proud, my career goal is to own my own business and being successful at doing so, finally, my educational goal is to get my bachelors degree and grauate with honors and even moving on to getting my masters. Having goals is important to me because I know that while I am in the process of accomplishing them I will have something great to look forward to in the end.
Out of everything that we 've learned this quarter, goal setting was something that stood out to me. There are a few times where I set a goal in my head but end up never achieving them, wether it was something very simple or more of a long term goal. A technique that stood out to me in our notes is, writing down your goals. I don 't I 've ever written down a single goal that I 've had. In class and in our notes we talked about how it is important to write down your goals and how you cannot just write the general idea of your goal, but how you need to be very specific in what it is you want to achieve. When planning for our future it is important to have clear goals in mind and to understand the steps that need to be taken to achieve those goals. My long-term goal is to run my own counseling center and employee at least one other person. Some Skills I already possess that will allow me to succeed with this plan are my ability to relate to people and be consistent in following the steps needed, even though it will be a long and tedious process.
For some people they aspire to have a specific career for their entire lives and know exactly where they want to receive their post secondary education. This was not my experience. Honestly, I had an extremely difficult time deciding on the occupation I wanted to pursue because I enjoy numerous, diverse hobbies and see multitudes of careers as interesting and important. After immense research and contemplation I found a career I believe is perfect for me and will allow me to be challenged and grow but also sustain any future financial needs.

If a person likes the job they do then it is not work, because finding satisfaction out of a job can bring great happiness.
