Title - Knowledge, attitude and practice of paediatric nurses on infection control INTRODUCTION Infection control is an essential part of nursing care delivery in each setting to reduce risks for morbidity and mortality in patients and care givers at all levels. Basic principles of infection prevention are simple and include personal hygiene and hand washing. More extensive infection risk reduction strategies are necessary for the management of indwelling devices such as enteral feeding systems, central venous catheters, intravenous cannula, devices and facilities for assisted ventilation and for surgical procedures that involve permanently implanted foreign bodies such as total joints and pacemakers. Infection risk reduction in patients across entire care, nurses must be vital role in infection control. It is essential to check the safety of patients as well as healthcare personnel and those who visit the health care environment.
The standard precautions include hand washing, using personal protective equipment when likely to come into contact with bodily substances e.g. gloves, gowns, aprons, and eye goggles, correct and safe disposal of sharps, in addition to correct disposal and management of infectious waste. Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. In the Operating room, it is expected that the environment should remain aseptic especially during a surgical procedure. This aseptic technique should not be limited to the environment only, but the operating room personnel should also be included. One of the effective way for a healthcare personnel to ensure aseptic technique is by hand hygiene.
