Essay On Packaging Technology

1240 Words3 Pages

Abstract :A fresh food which is prepared in a manufacturing plant must undergo several stages throughout its shelf-life. To achieve its sole purpose that is to reach the customer in a best possible way it is necessary to pack it in that regard. Hence Packaging technology acquires the big stage to assure desired returns to the processed food. A package provides protection to the food inside against external force and many other tampering agents. It may also containa nutritional facts label and other information about food being marketed. A choice of packaging machinery requires consideration of technical capabilities, maintainability, serviceability, ability to integrate into the packaging line, capital cost, floor space, flexibility, energy …show more content…

Key words: Crimpers; Cut-Of-Length (COL); Form Fill Seal (FFS); Precision control; Wrapper flow principle

Introduction:

The history of packaging goes back to the age of primitive human beings in sought of food. Giant steps in science and technology has given a tremendous boost to this value adding field. The world saw the first packaging machine in 1940s which was patented to USSR engineers.
Packaging technology also called as packaging engineering, packaging science is a broad topic ranging from design conceptualization to product placement. Through the inclusion of concurrent engineering packaging need to undergo thorough interaction with research and development, manufacturing, marketing, graphic design, regulation, purchasing, planning etc.
Packaging machines are also called Form Fill Seal (FFS) machines. This acronym is because of three main functions of packaging machines.
Form - Formation of tube like structure of film.
Fill - Filling of materials into that structure.

Reference refers to speed and position values which is generated using a pulse generator.
Parameters of interest: In order to design a packaging machine a package engineer needs dimension of material, which will be given by the customer. In some cases desired number of packages to be sealed in a minute will also be specified by the customer. Products per minute (PPM) will be a key parameter of the whole process of given length and this given length is called Cut Off Length (COL), it is the total length of the individual package. Crimpers are the actual sealing parts. Packaged in order to get sealed must go in between two shafts place one above the other each consists of equal number of crimpers. While relating COL with PPM it is very much vital to have a clear estimate on the number of crimpers to have. To relate them in a easy way,
Number of crimpers α PPM
COL α 1 / PPM
The next important parameter is the Cutting Head Diameter. Head Diameter is the distance between the center points of two shafts which hold the
