North vs. South: Who killed the Reconstruction? It’s the end of the Civil War and the nation is completely corrupt. Racism, destroyed towns, and an unscrupulous government are in the middle of the Reconstruction. The Civil War was said to be the bloodiest war in American history. Some of the battles were the Battle of Antietam, Battle of Shiloh, Seven Days Battle, and the First Battle of Bull Run. An extreme amount of people were killed. The Battle of Antietam is said to be the bloodiest day in American History. A whopping 23,000 people died in that one single day. When the Civil War ended with the Battle of Gettysburg the North and South were in ruins, but the South was completely destroyed. The KKK was a terrorist group that murdered anybody who supported the Reconstruction. They mostly focused their attacks on Republicans. One attack they made was on John W. Stephens. They murdered him by stabbing him then hanging him in the Grand Jury room of the Courthouse. They did this to show that they were a threat to those in Congress. He was completely innocent just like several other victims of KKK attacks. The KKK was basically after anyone in power, as in lawyers, judges, and government officials. The KKK did not want reconstruction to start in the South. Albion Tourgee said, “I have little doubt that I shall be one of the next victims.” He also said, “I say to you plainly that any member of congress who, especially from the South, does not support, advocate, and urge immediate active measures to put an end to the outrages...is a coward, a traitor, or a fool.” Overall, the KKK killed the Reconstruction because it showed that the South was not going to budge about not supporting the Reconstruction (Doc A Par
