Senior citizens are one group of people that are significantly more likely to receive some sort of neglect or abuse (. Society and the local government agencies such as Adult Protective Services or the Office of Aging have a responsibility to make sure these people’s rights are not being violated in any way, shape or form. sthat they have a higher risk of abuse and neglect than somebody that is not disabled or not a senior citizen. In the United States of America as well as many other countries that are supposed to be advanced, there are changes that need to be made in order to improve the quality of life for senior citizens living in a nursing facility or their own home. This is another serious issue that contributes to the reoccurrence of abuse. These offenders cannot go unpunished. In the United Sates, prisons are severely overcrowded with petty offenders. This may be a contributor to why so many abusers are allowed to continue. Violating the rights of another individual is not a petty crime and should not be treated as such. These offenders need to be removed from the situation so that they do not continue to cause harm to others. One difficulty in correcting the issue of elder neglect and abuse is that no one knows it’s happening until the damage is already done. To counter this, there needs to be stricter qualifications for those that want to be care givers. This brings up a second issue that is faced when trying to make a plan that is effective in preventing these types of incidents. That issue is that many qualified individuals are not interested in doing this type of work. Medical professionals should also became familiar with the signs of elder abuse and neglect. Doctors and some other professionals are mandated reporters to law enforcement, Adult Protective Services (APS) or their county’s Office of Aging. If doctors and other health professionals are made aware of the signs, they will be more effectively be able to report these cases to the proper agency. An article including a study done on elder abuse states, “Older adults typically know their perpetrators, who are usually family members (e.g., spouse, adult child, grandchildren, nieces/nephews), friends, and others they trust and rely upon for help and services (Roberto 305).” There are many solutions to the issues that are currently affecting the care of senior citizens that are reliant on others for assistance. Improving the quality of the care giver is one of the major factors that will benefit both the individual providing the care and the senior citizen. Proper training, lower work load and providing a higher wage will improve the quality of the care by improving the work environment of the care giver. More funding to improve the quality of the caregiver and the quality of the living situation for senior citizens is crucial to making positive changes to the care
