Question of morality is a controversial one and usually occurs when things take a turn for the worse. What do people considered being morally right and what is morally wrong? Does law dictate it or do we follow ethics? Where people believe that there is not other solution but to commit a deed that can ultimately lead to destruction, question of faith and sometimes death. Each person has his or her very own opinion of what is deemed moral and what is not. This essay will analyze two films, which are related to the matter of morality to seek and discuss the issue of what exactly morality is. The two movies discussed in the paper will be An Indecent proposal, which is filmed in 1993, and It’s a wonderful life which is filmed in 1946. Both films discuss the theme of morality, specially the need for financial stability in our society and the implication of money to our morality. Both films examine the issue of money and people’s moral compass when two are involved. The two films both bring the questions of financial problems. In It’s a wonderful life, George all through his life has been a moral individual starting in his childhood where he saved his sibling and turned out to become deaf in the process. He also goes on to save a child from being poisoned but in the end ends up being the one accused of trying to poison the child. It can be deemed that George all throughout has been a morally upright individual. However, when financial trouble sets in and he loses an additional $8,000, he opts to end his life and go to the bridge to commit suicide. He perceives life to be worthless because he has no money and that the best solution is to end his life and have his family receive his life insurance. For example, in the films, it would be thought unethical to have sex with someone else who is not your partner, even more immoral when sex is obtained with money. Furthermore, committing suicide to get money when things get rough is also considered unethical. In conclusion, both films discussed the implication of money and the moral questions that might arise from lack of it. It suggested that money is a great necessity in our society today and could lead people to do drastic things even after realizing the consequences that might arise. It is a push to discover our morality. Ultimately though, decisions are made, consequences are faced and humans learn from accepting that morality is subjective and we are solely responsible for upholding it.
