There are five basic types of martial arts. The five basic types are Dragon, Snake, Crane, Tiger, and Leopard. Bodidharma, a monk from India, came up with the five styles of fighting. Shaolin monks adopted these fighting styles to defend themselves from thieves. More than 1,000 years later we now have the many different types of martial arts. The Leopard is one of the five basic fighting styles. The Leopard is strong against the Dragon fighting style. It is weak against the Snake fighting style. The leopard is an offensive animal, so it is based off an offensive attacking style. The Leopard uses fast unceasing attacks and a nonstop rapid-fire barrage. The Leopard uses multiple hits at one time to defeat an opponent rather the one big hit so if the attacker misses one hit it is not important to the outcome. It uses the sum of multiple hits to beat an opponent rather than a few powerful hits. Leopard uses constant motion. It doesn’t stay in one spot for more than a blink of an eye. You use shifting body movements and footwork to evade and set up the next wave of strikes. The Leopard’s defense is a secondary by product. The Leopard does not commit itself to any one action. It can make a yummy treat for the Dragon. The Leopard’s reliance on multiple attacks and makes it vulnerable to the vital strike and grappling attributes of the Snake. What I just described is the “animal” or that one specific style of fighting. The “animals” are theoretical extremes thought, there is no style or action that is 100% Tiger or Snake. Single arts have taken parts of “animals” to make their style more effective. Wing Chun often uses a balance of all animals. A fighter will usually switch between styles in the middle of a fight to change it up.
