By saying “the whole point of knowledge” it restricts the statement by referring to the fact that the only reason for acquiring knowledge is to produce meaning and purpose. In order to fully answer and understand this questions, first we must define Knowledge in the context of our personal lives. Knowledge is a process of acquisition; it’s how we gain knowledge that shapes us as a knower, rather than the knowledge itself. Meaning is defined as how your paradigm is impacted by the knowledge and purpose is defined as giving an emotional or tangible aim to the knower. However, emotion and reason often times contradict each other when it comes to religion. Sometimes the knowledge that one adheres to may not be the most reasonable. For example, some people choose to adopt the belief of evolution over a religion, whereas others strongly believe in a higher power. Their emotions often times trump reason due to a strong sense of faith. Sometimes, religious knowledge is often more valuable than scientific knowledge due to the emotion it invokes in the knower which is more related to the creation of purpose and meaning in life. However, this being said, is scientific knowledge considered less purposeful? If both provide meaning to our lives, how can one be determined as more meaningful than the other. In the same manner of religion and faith, Ethics can be used as a tool or a guideline to live by. It gives us the tools to determine what is right or wrong. Our knowledge of ethics allows us to develop morals and a conscience. These ways are often connected and intersect, which allows the same person to follow more than one motivation for the same task simultaenously. However, this can also work in reverse, happiness, meaning and purpose, all also have an effect on knowledge. They aid us in confirming or rejecting knowledge throughout our lives. Perception of having found purpose or meaning from some knowledge gained, will allows us to decipher whether said knowledge is good, useful, valuable, etc. Furthermore, since knowledge is a process that never ends and continues throughout our entire life, we must keep reevaluating and reassessing it, and then decide whether to continue our exploration of more knowledge; or start forgetting and discarding it. However, to say the whole point of knowledge is to produce meaning and purpose in our personal lives is limiting because knowledge goes beyond that. Yes, it allows us to move forward on to ever deeper, more certain and more meaningful knowledge. But, it also motivates us on a personal and professional level to gain more knowledge in order to succeed. It gives us access to belief systems that shape who we are as a society and how we choose to live our personal lives. We are constantly learning, hence, recieving new knowledge every day.
