Some questions to think about are how did Florida get its name? Why did a Spanish explorer named Juan Ponce de Leon go there, what did he explore and why he named it Florida? Florida has a very rich history as Juan Ponce de Leon came here for a Fountain of Youth, he explored many things like the Florida keys, and he named the land Florida for various reasons like its vivid landscape and the Spanish Easter Celebration.
Juan Ponce de Leon came here because he was in search of the mystical Fountain of Youth that he believed was on an island known as Bimini. According to many legends and myths, people say that whoever bathes or drinks from the fountain will become younger. People also say that it glows in the dark at night, sending a glare on the water. These stories caused many people to start expeditions and adventures to seek the Fountain of Youth. When he reached the coast on his first expedition, he discovered this area of lavish landscape and beautiful beaches. The area was filled with water slowly streaming against the beach and back; while on the landscape, birds would glide and sing. He named the area Florida in honor of the abundant and beautiful landscape. People also believe he named the land Florida, because they discovered the area near the time of the Spanish Easter celebration.
Finally, Juan Ponce de Leon discovered and explored many other places such as the Florida Keys, beaches, islands, currents, and Indian tribes. He once experienced Cape Canaveral, an area filled with rough currents. He even explored the east coast, along the Florida Keys, and he named an island, Dry Tortugas, for it's turtles.
