Hip Hop, or rap music, is a cultural movement that began in the 1980’s & 90’s within Harlem. The unique musical style of rhythmic lyrics soon became a long lasting and influential form of art that began by voicing the political, social, and struggles of black people. More than any other type of music, Hip Hop has used its power and notoriety to alert the world about the injustices in the inner city areas of America. This is why Hip Hop has become a vital piece in educating today’s teens about social and political topics in the world today. Hip Hop has also reached to people with all sorts of perspectives and viewpoints on social issues. Rap encourages adolescents to become concerned about issues such as racial injustices, police brutality, individuality, etc. Making youth conscious of the world around them is Important because they will want to make a difference and make society better. In Arizona an organization created “ELEMENTary Hip Hop Skool”, which looks to use rap to get the youth involved in making the community a better place. “ELEMENTary Hip Hop Skool” looks to equip youth with leadership skills and individuality– by using Hip Hop. Recently “Project Spitfire”, another grassroots organization, seeks to unite up-and-coming musicians with producers that can help them better themselves. Spitfire also gives their new artists a $100 signing bonus and multiple photo shoots. They look to sign new artists that rap about change and bring a positive message. Spitfire wants to give these artists a place to rap their stories and experiences.
