Hip Hop
Hip Hop was originated in New York with ghetto black and Latinos in the late 1960's of the 20th century and as of top hip hop still continues to evolve to present days and toward the future. Hip Hop is a culture, a type of art that has influenced countries all around the world. It is also a type of empowerment, especially for people of African America descent who wanted an outlet to express themselves in unique fashion when it originated in the 1970s. When people refer to "hip hop", the initial thought of music comes to mind and then dance that is associated with it. But it encompasses a little more than that, activities such as DJing, break dancing, graffiti, and rapping are all under the category of Hip Hop culture. People also have unique dress style and language that can easily distinguish them from outsiders. Although Hip Hop has a relatively short history from its origin over forty years ago, it has evolved and made it's way into mainstream culture and has fascinating journey leading up to today.
Hip hop has brought many people from all over the world together. With different culture style like graffiti, breaking, Beatbox, MCing, and DJing. These are some way to express who you are. Djing, is a technique of manipulating sounds and creates music using phonograph turntables and a DJ mixer. MCing, is all about rapping which is refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a strong addition. Rapping can be broken down to different things, such as "flow" and "delivery". After more than 30 years since hip hop cultures developing, there are no show of signs that this is going to be slowing down, instead it is going to continue to group. Especially in today sociality there are many way to keep it going due to technology.
Hip hop was started 1970's and has changed a lot in the past 30 years. Hip Hop is now apart of a mainstream music scene. It is not a surprise that artist from different genres collaborating with Hip Hop artists. Also its not uncommon to see artist hip hop music and cultures in moves, television shoes, and commercials. Before different ethnic communities wear different type of clothing to represent themselves and hip hop to their own culture. But today all races including Asian, Caucasian, and many more have accepted the hip hop style or you can say clothing.
The hip hop culture began in the suburbs of New York over 30 years ago and has gone through drastic changes over this time. Hip Hop contains four different elements including: graffiti, rap, disc jockey and break-dancing. In the 1970’s, musical artists began to express themselves like Kool DJ Herc. Rap music began to spread through the urban neighborhoods of New York City and people used a new form of expression that gave a chance to sing about anything.
Hip-Hop is in todays times is considered to be a cultural movement in todays generation. The five elements of Hip-Hop starting off with the beat boxer, Deejay, next is the Master of ceremonies also known as the MC or Rapper, break dancing, graffiti, and knowledge and style. Recognizing myself as an African American male growing up in the suburbs I was always a sight for sore eyes, not in a sense for being ugly or due to my pigment of skin it was do to the pigment of my skin but how I dressed compared to the other kids growing up. Hip-Hop is a cultural movement that emerged from the dilapidated South Bronx, New York in the early 1970’s. The area’s mostly African American and Puerto Rican residents originated this uniquely American musical genre and culture that over the past four decades has developed into a global sensation impacting the formation of youth culture around the world. The South Bronx was a whirlpool of political, social, and economic upheaval in the years leading up to the inception of Hip-Hop. The early part of the 1970’s found many African American and Hispanic communities desperately seeking relief from the poverty, drug, and crime epidemics engulfing the gang dominated neighborhoods. Hip-Hop proved to be successful as both a creative outlet for expressing the struggles of life amidst the prevailing crime and violence as well as an enjoyable and cheap form of recreation.
Hip-hop began in the undergrounds in Bronx New York in the early 1970s and has gradually grown to become mainstream music. According to Lori Selke a professional writer for Global post, “hip-hop is the term that refers to more than just a musical genre; it includes culture, dance, art, and even fashion” (Selke). Since it originated in the 1970’s, hip-hop has had profound influence on society, and has grown into the lives of listeners worldwide; hip-hop’s influential power is astonishing. Within the last decade, hip-hop artist like Jay-Z, Nas, and Young Jeezy helped to increase voting in the 2008 presidential campaign by informing a hip hop audience consisting of a majority of African Americans on soon to be 44th President of the United States, by using their voice and lyrics as their tool to encouraging people to stand up for a change by voting. According to Emmett Price in his book Hip Hop Culture (2006), “in the early years prior to the rise of recorded rap music via Sugar Hill Gang’s controversial “Rapper’s Delight” (1979) hip-hop was a growing culture driven by self-determination, a love for life, and a desire to have fun [through entertaining fans and expressing themself].” (Price) Although artists today accomplish the same things, the focus of the lyrics has changed consisting of “extolling violence, drug and alcohol use, and detailing sexual exploits” (Selke). If one were to observe the most popular music from artist in the 80’s until now, they would notice a definitive change in its overall message. If hip-hop continues on its current route it will become a musical genre known solely for its references to sex, drugs, and violence.
The hip-hop community has been greatly influenced by the Black Arts Era. Both groups have addressed social, political issue as well as giving voice to the emotional discord of the black man. These groups push the boundaries using words meant to inflame the black man and shock the Caucasians.
Hip hop culture has been around since the 1970s. Multiple sources all come down to the South Bronx in New York City, as the origin of hip hop culture. The culture began to take its shape within the African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Latino communities. The father of the start of this culture was a Jamaican-born DJ named Clive Campbell but also known as DJ Kool Herc. He brought forth a new sound system and the Jamaican style of “toasting.” Toasting was when Jamaicans would talk or rap over the music they played. This whole new style soon brought what is now known as DJs, B-Boys, MC’s, and graffiti artists (Kaminski).
Hip hop originated in the ghetto areas of New York during the 1970’s and is a mixture of DJ, MC, B boy and Beat boxing. In his studies of defining hip hop, Jeffries concluded that these mixtures of art forms do not define hip hop but rather that Hip hop itself is a culture of these elements. “Hip-hop is like a culture, it’s a voice for black people to be heard. Our own style, our own music” (Jeffries. 2011; 28). Jefferies identifies hip hop as a social movement, which stems from the concept of ‘collective identity’ (Jefferries.2011; 27). This can be defined as “an individual’s cognitive, moral and emotional connection with a broader community” (Polletta and Jasper. 2001; 84). Black culture in our society has come to the point where it is allied with pop culture. The most popular music genres, slang terms, to dance forms it all comes from black culture. Hip hop emerged from black culture, becoming the soul of it that is seen in the media. Hip hop helped the black community by creating new ways of expressing themselves, from breakdance, graffiti, rap and other music, to slang. This culture was rooted in their tradition and created from something new. Hip hop created a new form of music that required the use of turn tables, ‘cuts’, loops, rhythm, rhyme, stories, and deep-rooted emotions, but also incorporated black oral forms of storytelling using communal authors.
It is a culture borne of poor, inner-city life in America that has evolved into the rallying cry of those unable to negotiate the nuances of the mainstream.” Hip hop culture besides being just a music, it has the same power as the religions people have on people. It’s the culture of the people who lived in the poorest part of the Americas and didn’t have the power to negotiate their feelings. I agree hip hop is not just a music its a culture or religion, but it is filled with the emptiness and doesn’t go in the right and humanity direction and as Hicks describes "Hip-hop culture deadens the drive toward civility and legitimizes backwardness”.
By corporating the airwaves with message, serve as a blueprint for our youth to self-destruct by creating a large army of pants-sagging, Blunt-smoking, tattooed-up, uneducated, STD-infected, impoverished thugs. Hip Hop is defined as: “subculture especially of inner-city youths who are typically devotees of Rap music, graffiti, break dancing, and DJing”. If one asks a fan of Hip Hop what the definition is to them, then one might get something deeper. Some fans define Hip Hop as a culture that consists of many of its own subcultures and its knowledge of the history and principles of Hip Hop. Hip-hop music is portrayed by an entertainer rapping over a track that regularly comprises of loops or specimens of other music woven together (Selke INT). Hip-hop originally appeared in the Bronx around the 1970s and steadily turned into the predominant mainstream music structure by the 1990s, representing a multi-billion dollar industry today (Selke INT). Hip-hop music can additionally have some positive impacts. For example, its verbal imagination can motivate audience members to play with dialect, and acknowledge musicality and rhyme (Selke INT). Just like poetry, hip-hop can be a way of expressing oneself.
