There are many ups and downs that a nursing student will endure while going through a nursing program. No one will ever understand the frustrations that one will endure while going through such a rigorous program more than your fellow nursing friends that have gone through the program with you or one’s that have already gone through a similar nursing program. The connections that are made with patients, teachers, fellow colleagues, or even fellow nurses will never be forgotten and will forever be remembered. It’s hard to believe that the end is near and so many memories, good and bad have been made. The tears that have been shed were all worth it and will make all that have gone through a nursing program a better, stronger, wiser person. The
It could be a little child with a bad cough, an elderly patient that had chest pain for days or even someone that got bite by a snake. It was very interesting to see what would come through those doors. The nurses that work down in the emergency room were very helpful and appreciative of the students that would be down there. It was great getting paired up with a nurse that would take time to explain things so that I could get a better understanding of the plan of care for a patient. The paramedics down in the emergency room were also very helpful, encouraging and pushing me to get out of my comfort zone and start IVs. This was a great place to be to learn to become successful on starting IVs. It was a very fast paced environment and had so many great learning opportunities down there for a student
I wish that more time would have been spent in certain areas (it would have been nice to go to All Children’s Hospital or a level one trauma hospital to see critical care cases) but I am grateful for all the experiences that I have endured and lessons that I have learned. It has been a long journey and I am glad that this chapter of my nursing career is almost over. I am looking forward to what the future has in store for me. I have met some great people along the way that we have laughed, cried, brought bread with and leaned on each other through so many tough times. I can honestly say that I have made some great friends that I know will be forever friends. I know that I will be a great nurse because of the great clinical experiences. It has been over one year since I have started the accelerated nursing program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. When I first started the program in fall 2014, I have no idea what nursing was like. Although I had my bachelor from another institution, everything I learned was very different compared to the information I have learned in School of Nursing. Nursing school has slowly transformed me into a graduate professional nurse based on the professional development that I have completed along the way.
Nursing is a complex degree, so many different subsets and divisions that it is hard for the common person to fathom. Returning to my education and rediscovering all these theories and ideas is very overwhelming. In my work I am already beginning to see myself change for the better. Work is always very stressful even more so now, and I see myself becoming a leader when in the past I would not have been. While reading the assignment this week and focusing on the Essentials document and the other readings I find myself inspired and saddened. Inspired to becoming a better nurse, co-worker, advocate, and friend in the working environment. Saddened because the last nine years I believed that I was providing excellent patient
First and foremost, nursing is not just a job. It is a profession that requires giving “self” every minute, of everyday. Though job security and salary can be added benefits, they simply could never surpass the emotional, psychological, and physical components that nursing requires. Some might think it is alarming that at the point of preceptorship, the end of a student’s career, he or she believes job security and salary are the reasons to go into this field, even worse that he or she would admit it to a seasoned nurse. In a moment like this, the preceptor will have to take a deep breath, close her eyes, and remember all the moments in her career that kept her going.
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. I am committed to continue to pursed advanced degree in nursing ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner. . In the next five to ten years from now, I want to write articles and books about nursing and healthcare related. Therefore, I believe that if I improve myself further positively, I will grow from strength to strength and one day my paper will be read in one of the prestigious newsletters, journals, and textbooks. As you can see registered nurses are an important part of the health care system today. Risking their health and well-being for that of other people. Just remember how much they’ve helped you over time, whether it be curing a simple illness or mending a broken bone. Next time you see a nurse why not thank them for everything they have done. After doing research on this career I have decided that I am still interested and would like to pursue a career in this field.
My extracurricular and academic activities have helped mold me into a person with character and good qualities. These qualities--respect, humility, kindness, ambition, appreciation for diversity and collaboration, and courage--have not come without valuable failures and lessons. I can continue to develop these qualities and build upon these lessons as I go forward with my university goals and the desire I have to enter the healthcare profession as a nurse. I am able to look beyond the exciting, glamorous parts of both and see that there will be lots of hard work and difficulty. I am ready to face those challenges and do my best and give my all.
As I reflect on this paper, I realize that it is okay to feel a certain way when going through change. As a matter of fact, I have spoken to one of my peers who will also be applying to the nursing program this upcoming Fall and it turns out that she has also been feeling this way. I am not alone in this like I thought I was. I have realized that whatever is worth it, will not come easy. It is going to be an emotional roller coaster filled with doubts, excitement, success, let downs, but in the end it will definitely be worth it. I will be the nurse that I aspire to be.

Throughout my final ten weeks at my placement, I have grown and overcome so many obstacles. I have accomplished a wide range of skills since the beginning and have been improving on them as I gained experience. At my placement as a student nurse, I have gained a lot of confidence, skills, knowledge and experiences that have helped me act and work in a professional way. For my clinical observation experience I went to the Emergency Department at JFK Medical Center. The first emergency nurse I was assigned to was responsible for six beds. When I first arrived the nurse explained to me that she prioritizes her care based on urgency and airway problem. Since the rest of her patients were stable, she went to perform a focused assessment on a new patient assigned to one of her beds. This patient came in because he had fallen in the bathroom.
