What crime affects one to four women in the United States each year? Domestic Violence. This crime is responsible for about 30% of female murders (Asher, Elba). Women need to comprehend the seriousness of this crime and know that there are laws to protect them so that they will not feel so helpless in any violent dispute.

Domestic Violence has drastically increased over the years. Violence in the home is a concern for most. The most affected victims rather it’s emotionally or physically are women. They fall into different categories: single, married, separated, or divorced. For years, people try to avoid this conversation. Women of all ages, all ethnicity, and all social level are affected by domestic violence in their homes. There are many reasons as to why this problem has been ignored for decades. Domestic Violence is clearly a problem that many agree upon. It is the solution that most are divided. Many agree that a solution to violence against women is to prevent it from occurring through harsher laws against the abusers.

Domestic Violence is the most widespread violation to not only human rights but to any woman rights. Domestic Violence can be defined as an act of physical, verbal or emotional abuse between intimate partners. Abuse usually starts slowly and then worsens in time (Domestic Violence articles). It starts with a show of violence against a thing or situation, and then it escalate to threats and name calling. The violence become worse and the victim being to experience slapping, hitting, pushing and punching. Because of the lack of funding for male victims, there are very few shelters that accommodate them. Most shelters will only take women and children. Because agencies and the government refuse to fund a research for men, people are still under the myth of, women are only violent when they are defending themselves, or men can easily leave an abusive relationship. Men who suffer from domestic violence can only receive help if they break their silence. However, there is some help for male victims of domestic violence. MenWeb (www.batteredmen.com) offer resources for abused men, as well as a place for them to tell their story. There is a hotline for domestic violence victims, rather its male or female (1-888-7HELPLINE) operated by a nonprofit in Harmony, Maine.
