Carter Habecker Mrs. Blamey Composition 11X 4 April 2014 Discerning the Mundane Freedom is a simple enough idea we generally all accept and claim to understand and partake in. Besides, we live in a free country, do we not? You’ve heard the title land of the free and know the gist of the idea as it is applied to our everyday lives. Our freedom comes from our government when people do their duties as a citizen and play the roles they are told to. But, is that really freedom? No. The typical understanding of freedom we all accept as correct remains heinously perverted in regards to the true meaning of freedom. Although freedom is blindly understood as the rudimentary ability to speak and act without restraint, the genuine meaning of freedom exhibits a deeper complexity staunchly relying on individualism in action, morals, and mental capacities- an idea that bends the minds of humans, as it is a seemingly rare variation of the idea. When aiming for a negation of freedom one need not look any further than duty. The concept of duty is absolute in its exclusion of freedom. Duty calls for an individual to refrain from individuality and fall in line with a general standard. This specifically applies to freedom in action although it does bleed into the moral freedoms of an individual due to the influence a duty has on choice and, in turn, one’s moral affinities residing in that decision. Regardless of the action, those acts executed in accordance with obligation to outside factors are presumably unfree. Man is within the realm of freedom when self-governance or autonomy is fulfilled solely through individual choice without external inspiration. Therefore, freedom is in itself a peaceful notion and has nothing to do with the imposition of ideals of any sort. The relation of duty, conflict, peace, action, morals, interaction with others, and expression towards freedom is inescapable and presents the fact that freedom has much more to do with our lives than being able to yell fire in a movie theatre or burn an American flag. Yes, it is much more deeply rooted in the life of an individual to the point of nearly defining individual itself. With an understanding of freedom as true in nature as it is in humans one captures an ability of understanding that ascends that of speculation concerning the actions of others and the drive behind them. One might even conclude that freedom is quite possibly the best knowledge behind the comprehension of human life, perhaps even better than the number 42.
Throughout history, Americans have sought to spread the spirit of equality, which is believed to be the realization of true freedom. Before establishing this freedom, every American had only one question stuck in their head: What is freedom? Our country received it in the year of 1776 from the British through a series of difficulties and wars. African Americans defined it as an escape from slavery, while immigrants defined it as their acceptance into a new society. More yet, women of the women’s suffrage defined their freedom as their recognition into society and for their rights to be equal to that of every other man. These different perceptions of cultures/groups in America tied together to form an American view of freedom. Freedom is something that every American should be willing to do anything in order to maintain. We may have weapons of mass destruction, but when it comes to living in a peaceful, American lifestyle, our freedom is our greatest weapon.

Yes it indeed bears repeating, “Freedom Is Not Free!” Its acquisition from King George’s England involved struggle, its maintenance throughout the first two and a quarter centuries of our Great Republic required sacrifice and its continuation demands perseverance. Wise people fully realize that struggle, sacrifice and perseverance are the vital characteristics of freedom, democracy and independence. Ever since the New World was discovered, people have been fighting for their independence till this day. People of other colors and race have been forced to do labor without their consent. Today, those same people have been blamed or accused of crimes that were not committed by them despite of being free. Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. In America there is numerous of choices that someone may make on a daily basis. If someone were allowed to make their own choices and were being told what to do; then they would not be free. When someone is allowed to speak when they want to, and say what they want; such as their opinion or view of something. Being allowed to have a right to speak is one of the most important characteristics of being an American. Freedom is a human value that has inspired many poets, politicians, spiritual leaders, and philosophers for centuries. Poets have rhapsodized about freedom for centuries. Politicians present the utopian view that a perfect society would be one where we all live in freedom, and spiritual leaders teach that life is a spiritual journey leading the soul to unite with God, thus achieving ultimate freedom and happiness. In addition, we have the philosophers who perceive freedom as an inseparable part of our nature, and spend their lives questioning the concept of freedom and attempting to understand it (Transformative Dialogue, n.d.).
When referring to freedom these words are often associated with freedom: Liberty, independence, sovereignty, autonomy, privilege, immunity, and indulgence. Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and justice. Independence is granted by freedom in the sense that an outside party does not control you. To gratify ones desires by whichever ways they choose is freedom through indulgence. Privileges are g ranted through freedom. In some countries the dictator or ruler makes choices for their people on regards to what profession they shall have or to what religion they shall worship. In the United States we have special privileges that let the people of the country decide on their own religion and professions.
