Defining Digital Communication: In today’s world communication includes a vast array of media sources: audio, video, rich media presentations, interactive websites, DVDs, simulations and virtual environments. Digital communication is one form of communication that I am reviewing and it is defined as electronic transmission of information that has been encoded digitally for storage and processing by computers according to the Free Dictionary by Farlex. In schools the age of effective communication is becoming more widespread. The use of transmitting information is becoming prevalent in schools and how to create messages utilizing the right medium to communicate in a way to help students to achieve in school and in the community, and beyond …show more content…
School have decided to take a hand in assisting this growing need by incorporating into their curriculum digital communication skills through specialized courses or component parts of existing coursework from elementary through high school. This may be displayed in a variety of formats, e-portfolios, virtual games, multimedia presentations or interactive websites through coding. The key to effective digital communication is to be able to create persuasive messages that will foster the four skill clusters of academic standards. They are the new digital age literacy; inventive thinking: high productivity: and effective …show more content…
As a teacher I have found that the use of visual aids stimulates the student’s imagination and fosters their creative process. As the students become adept at the use of digital communication then they will become the next generation of communication guru. They are a step above the norm and are thus considered effective communicators and are prepared for the future and what’s in store. With feedback from community organizations and companies, school are becoming better equipped with providing the skills needed to meet the requirements of a growing new age
Technology can enhance class communications by offering many different ways to reach parents and students. The use of different technologies can help teachers to answer student questions as well as continue a class discussion outside of class. This is helpful for both the student and teacher because it allows the teacher to see which students are comprehending the material they are learning.
It is no more pertinent than today to acknowledge that students live in a technology driven world where information and communication technologies are integrated into everyday situations (QSA, 2007). Prensky, 2001 suggests that it is now clear that as a result of the abundant technological environment and students’ substantial level of interaction with it, that today’s students think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors. With this in mind, it is crucial that as a future educator, I bring to the classroom new and innovative ways of teaching and learning in order to motivate and interest these ‘digital natives’ (Halat, 2008).

Technology has improved how we communicate with one another and opens many doors for us. In ancient times people had to directly take a message somewhere, which could take days, weeks, or even years. Today, a person can send a message that would arrive in less than 10 seconds, whether it be via e-mail or text message. Source B by Kevin Delaney discusses how teachers are impressed by the new use of technology in their classroom. They are able to let children learn foreign languages online, use technology to analyze data and new gadgets to collect that data. Some people such as Tim Wilson, a technology-integration specialist at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota and Angel Boligan, a Mexican political cartoonist feel that technology is breaking and weakening communication between youth and the outside world. Wilson brings up the question in Source B “how do we communicate with students today who have grown up with technology from the beginning?” and Boligan in Source F also raises a similar question with his cartoon, asking how can children connect to the outside world if they are so d...
Lee introduces the topic of his presentation by a statement “…We live in the age of Info-whelm.” He explains this statement by summarizing an example of a study conducted in 2003 by researches from Berkley University in California. The researches collected all the data available digitally to today’s generations and found the amount of data available online would be about 5 x the amount of books available in Library of Congress, which is the largest Library in the world. He is explaining this fact to introduce a problem of today’s education and the actual preparedness of the next generation to the job market. He explains how today’s students and even young children are able to process and comprehend digital information. He present several examples of studies conducted to proof how today’s generation is capable to absorb digital image 60 000 x more than generations before them. Lee is effectively using illustrations and images throughout his whole presentation. He explains that today style of lectures in teaching is obsolete and ineffective. He declares how students today are being thought and prepared for jobs of the pass. He urges the educators to provide new sets of skills and tests, and new style of teachings for the future generations. He offers several solutions to prepare present and new generation for future jobs. He proposes teaching
“Technology has provided the opportunity to create an entirely new learning environment; it has significantly increased the range and sophistication of possible classroom activities” (Hawkins 1997). The vast majority of youths today, grow up with computers and encounter some form of digital learning (Kolikant, 2009). The idea that has had the most impact is that the technology today will be outpaced by the next generation. Most of the technology seen today will never be used by an infant when he reaches school age.
Mullen, R., & Wedwick, L. (2008). Avoiding the digital abyss: Getting started in the classroom
Before the age of the internet, smart phones, and computers, students relied on their school and local library to gather information for research projects. Prior to 1994, communication by phone was done by voice and dialing digits (Noeth, 2004). The inception of text messaging digitized our way of sending short quick messages to one another without the formality of hello and goodbye. With the advancement of computers and technology overall, the medium in which educators would present learning material has evolved to the point of having any fact or subject within seconds of an internet search. It is well document that the use of technology will increase students’ academic level and engagement to produce better outcomes (Perrotta, 2013). Furthermore, schools have traditionally been slow to adapt to the new technologies being introduced to the corporate world, and is imperative that they keep up with this pace in order to prepare today’s student for tomorrow’s advancement’s.
Technology is growing every day. We use technology for everything we do, sometimes without even thinking about it. In our world, these advancements are used for communicating, entertainment, and education as well as others. Since technology is so ingrained into our lives, how much we use and depend on it is often not thought about. Our education system is on the front end of using new technology in classrooms. More and more class room and teachers are weaving it into their lesson plans and making it more available for students to use in the classroom. Technology is changing the way students are educated in America and across the world. In this paper I will discuss several ways that this can be seen and improved.
Delaney explains that technology allows, “the educators...interact with students, parents and each other in ways they never have before.” The teachers are able to stay in contact with a student even when they are not at school. When a kid is sick and misses a day of school he no longer falls behind but is able to keep up with the help of technology. He also explains that technology not only helps the connection between the student and the teacher but also between the student and other students. He explains that teachers now have their students post online their papers so that other students can read over it and help them. This is an extremely powerful tool in the world of education that students and teachers have never had before until now. Although these new methods of learning are cutting edge and extremely beneficial they also have the recoil of the struggle of having adults and teachers who did not grow up with technology not being able to communicate with the students of
With the widespread use of digital technology, the classroom teaching approaches and practices went through remarkable changes. When compared to the past ten years, today the classrooms look entirely different in terms of programs and technical tools used to enhance the learning skills of students.
There is a new substantial form of media that has been popularized in recent years that has changed how we as individuals and a society, think, live, share, and create. From the most influential politicization, to the vagabond on the street, every single person is affected by this new form of media and it becomes more substantial in our lives every day. The movie Men, Women, and Children, and the first chapters of New Media, and New New Media, all share a common theme: the attempt to shed light on this medium, called new media, and explain how it affects our lives.
Imagine someone born in the early 1900’s entering a modern-day classroom. They would likely be confused as to what televisions, computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices are. It is also likely that they would be overwhelmed by the instant access to information that the internet provides. Digital media has become a large part of people’s everyday lives especially with the rise of digital media in classrooms. Digital media is growing so rapidly that people who are not adapting to this shift in culture are falling behind and becoming victims of the “digital divide”, this is leaving people misinformed. Digital media has a large effect on the way that people communicate, this is especially evident in the way that students interact with
their dorm room or apartment is sit down at their computer and go online. They proceed to either, read their e-mail, check their online courses for new assignments, or go on one of the many communication websites or programs that are available currently to this generation. None of this would be possible without the readily available Internet access that we often take for granted. The Internet has proven not only useful for entertainment purposes, but has also dramatically changed the educational approach, for both students and educators, and the way knowledge is being obtained.
Throughout history we have many advancements. Technology has been one of the biggest. The top five advancements that have changed the face of education are Social Media, Online Classrooms, Tablets, Smartphones, and Free Online Resources. We can almost guarantee that in the future another advancement will be released that can help further our education or our children's education. This paper is going to introduce and further explore how digital learning will change education in the future. Listed below will be a few key subjects that will be discussed and further researched in the paper.
