Why is there an increase in depression in the United States?

There are many factors that can lead to depression. Americans have stated, everyday pressure is the leading cause of depression. Increased stress such as; school, work, and personal relationships can lead to depression. Severe depression is very common in teens, stress has been formed from withdrawl, aggression, and risky behavior.
“Almost 40 percent of parents say their high-schooler is experiencing a lot of stress from school.” (Johnson) Homework is the leading cause of stress to high-schoolers. Parents are worried stress will affect their children’s health. “A little stress is a good thing, it can motivate students to be organized. It makes people feel like they aren’t good enough and incapable of doing the things they want in life. Self-doubt can lead to stress with causes anxiety and depression. Self-doubt is associated with many factors such as; anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and low self-confidence.
There are many factors that increase the risk of depression, being the victim or witness of any violence, such as physical or sexual abuse may lead to depression. Often times people who get sexual assulted don’t know how to seek help. When the victim isn’t properly treated, it can lead to lifetime depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Some symptoms of sexual abuse include; suicide, aggressiveness, and fear. All these symptoms increase depression in Americans. (American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress)
A study has found there is an increase in symptoms of depression, but the study also found the suicide rate for teens have decreased a small amount. “Despite all of these symptoms, people are not any more likely to say they are depressed when asked directly, again suggesting that the rise is not based on people being more willing to admit depression.” (Twenge) “This study shows an increase in symptoms most people don’t even know are connected to depression, which suggests adolescents and adults really are suffering
