What exactly is cyberbullying? “Cyberbullying is when a child, preteen, or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones” (“What”). Many leading factors can cause children and adolescents to turn to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can cause severe emotional health issues. Many thrive off the reaction that they get from cyberbullying someone. “The Power-hungry do it to torment others and for their ego” (“Why”). Cyber bullies mainly target nerds or the socially awkward. Cyberbullying may be a way to seek out revenge. There is a predisposition for some kids who are victims of harassment to find a way to strike back. By cyberbullying others, they feel a sense of relief, from what they experienced. Cyberbullying often revolves around a person’s social status at school. Someone might cyberbully another who excels academically because, they are jealous of the other person superior intellect. A girl might cyberbully another girl simply over a guy that they both have a crush on. Kids, who are bored and seeking entertainment, will sometimes resort to cyberbullying, to spice things up or to add some excitement and drama to their lives (“Why). Cyber bullies thrive on the reaction they get from the victim. When getting cyber bullied the best thing to do is ignore it or leave the conversation. The only good news about bullying online or on phones is that evidence can usually get saved and shown to someone that can help. The evidence should be saved in case the bullying escalates. If the cyberbullying really gets to the victim they should reach out for help. Sometimes the only thing that the victim needs is someone to listen to their problems. Another good way to solve the cyberbullying problem is to block the person that is being the bully. Whether the harassment is in an app, texting, or comments, the victim should do themselves a favor and block the person (Cowie). Cyberbully is a drama television film that premiered on ABC Family in 2011. This film addresses the issue of cyberbullying, which Sticca, Ruggieri, Alsaker, and Perren (2013) define as the modern form of bullying that is through the use of electronic forms of communication. Sticca et al. (2013) added that cyberbullying is caused to harm or harass defenseless victims in an aggressive behavior that is intentionally hostile and repeated. Cyberbully is rated PG-13 and is targeted towards adolescents and parents. Through my analysis of Cyberbully, I concentrated on the social development of adolescents. I focused on phenomenon of cyberbullying among adolescents, the risk factors associated with cyberbullying victimization, and the conflicts adolescents and their parents face. Cyberbully’s main focus is to rise awareness of cyberbullying in hopes of more states placing anti-cyberbullying laws. This film sends a positive message to adolescents.
