Cultural awareness is being aware of our perspectives, beliefs, and values. People see and assess things in diverse ways. It is important when we interact with people from different cultures. Being culturally aware allows us to be open when connecting with others.
The purpose of cultural awareness is to step back from your own point of views and look at others in an enlightened way. Cultural awareness allows people to build effective relationships in everyday life. It also helps people to develop a better understanding of others culture and increase their knowledge of the topic. Our beliefs shape our attitude and behavior and are seen in all aspects of our lives. A person’s cultural beliefs are generally determined by where you are from and live. As an example, an
American man will have different beliefs from a Chinese man. I was born and have lived in North Carolina my entire life. I believe that everyone on this Earth should be treated equal and have a fair chance at everything, but I know it doesn’t always go like this. And that urges me to be the best person I can be and make sure that I treat everyone equally. A person’s values are their beliefs, ideals, or principles that they believe are proper or correct. Honesty, respect, and loyalty are three important values that I have. The people I associate myself with are people that have the same values as me. For example, if I know someone is disrespectful then I will not hang out with them because I do not want to be involved with that type of person. The thing I value the most is family. Nearly all the workers at NASA were Caucasian men, so when these women forced their way into these positions the Caucasian men and even some women had complications about the matter.
Everybody has different perspectives, beliefs, and values. No matter what you believe in you should always respect others believes. Just because someone has different values or perspectives than you it doesn’t mean theirs is wrong, just as it was with the three African American women in “Hidden Figures”. In the movie, the three women knew what the standards were of the time and they knew that they didn’t fit in per say, but that didn’t stop them from reaching their goals. They persevered and continued to go through the unbearable to prove that they were worthy to be working for NASA. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to have to go through the hardships that Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary had to go through at that point in their life. After watching this movie, I have gained a full understanding that you shouldn’t judge somebody by their appearance, race, religion, and sexual orientation.
