Communication in the 21st century.
Experts have claimed that communication has diminished over the 21st century, while others claim it has flourished with the introduction of new communication methods. This essay will argue with the latter that we as a collective of people have better means of communication than back in the 20th century and that it hasn’t diminished but more so flourished.
D.E McFarland, 2008, P.2 states the definition of communication as: “Communication may be broadly defined as the process of meaningful interaction among human beings. More specifically, it is the process by which meanings are perceived and understandings are reached among human beings.”

Communication is a vital part of relaying information and through these methods there are more ways than ever to relay this information. Where experts argue that communication has diminished; communication has never been easier or more accessible holding a long term relationship with a person on another continent. Whether these methods are through written posted letters, talking on the phone, Skype, text messaging or FaceTime; the stated methods of interaction have made communication easier than ever in the 21st century. They assist us in connecting to people that would have otherwise been impossible in the 20th century.
Rai and Rai state that “In the last four or five decades, the study of human communication has been refined and strengthened by contribution from a variety of disciplines. Definitions, descriptions of the process, and analyses of the elements of communication have been developed by many scholars.” (2008, p.1)

In a world where the reign of complexity rules with the strongest of influence, our ability to communicate with one another allows us to solve even the most difficult of situations. Even so, human beings take communication for granted, we possess the ability to communicate instantly from across the globe and in real time, we can alert others of danger within a minute 's notice, and keep our governments in check. Furthermore, Watson and Hill describe the process of communication as “one which begins when a message is thought up by a sender, who then encodes the message before transmitting it through a particular channel to a receiver, who in turn decodes the message with a certain effect as an outcome” (Price, 1998).The complexity of the whole process is seen through the use of verbal and nonverbal communication on a daily basis, as well as the ability to interact with other human beings on multiple levels, mentally and emotionally. We begin communicating the moment we come out of the womb and do not stop communicating until death. This essay will try to compare and contrast two different communication contexts- interpersonal and mass communication, by using relevant communication models.
