Since 1984, thanks to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, the legal drinking age in the United States has been 21 years old, but that should change with a new law. The minimum drinking age for those within the borders of the United States of America should be 18 years of age. Our current law involving the legal minimum drinking in the United States does not correspond with how our society acts. It is said that the main reason that legal minimum drinking age is 21 years of age because alcohol can hinder the growth of the frontal lobe in not fully developed brains, yet 18 years old is considered the age of adulthood in the United States. Since 18 years of age is considered the age of adulthood, 18 year olds have the same right to make their own decisions relating to their health just like any other adult. If you compare our drunk driving rate to those of a country with 18 years old being the minimum legal drinking age, both drunk driving rates have decreased within the past decade, but the country whose minimum legal drinking age is 18 still has a lower drunk driving rate than the United States. In all, the minimum legal drinking age needs to be lowered from 21 years old, to 18 years old because in the United States a person who is 18 years of age is allowed to make their own decisions for their wellbeing].
