To start with a quick sum up, on 11 September 2001, Islamist extremists stolen four airplanes that were flying above the US. Two of them were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Another was crashed into the Pentagon, Washington DC. The fourth airplane crashed into a field, 80 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The attacks surprised the world. It was the biggest terrorist attack ever on American soil. The twin towers of the World Trade Center were the highest buildings in New York, and famous throughout the world. Their destruction changed the city's skyline and would have a huge impact on the rest of the world’s history.
Osama bin Laden claimed that al Qaeda was solely responsible for 9/11. In 2004, he released a video in which he explained his dealings with lead hijacker Mohammed Atta. After the largest criminal investigation in history, the US government’s 9/11 commission also concluded that al Qaeda was solely responsible for the attacks. After the attacks, the president’s popularity increased from 50% to 90%, and a lot of Americans blinded relied on their government and on all the propaganda anti-terror that put fear on everybody.
In conclusion, about 3,000 people died as a consequence of the 9/11 attacks, and other thousand were killed in the aftermath, mostly civilians. The anti-terror war never ended, and 17 years after that day we are still not convinced that the American government did all of what was in its power to do their job protecting the population.
