What is an Enzyme? An enzyme is a substance that changes the role of a chemical reaction in living systems. It is involved in nearly every biochemical reaction as it lowers the activation energy. It helps cells to communicate with each other by keeping the life and death of the cell under control. What is the substrate of catalase? A substrate is a substance in which an enzyme reacts. A catalase is an enzyme that destroys harmful substances inside your body. Hydrogen peroxide (H_2 O_2) is produced in the body because of the reactive nature of oxygen. Oxygen atoms that are lost can be used to produce this. Catalase converts H_2 O_2 into the water and oxygen gas, thus, protects the DNA. Describe three safety factors to keep in mind during this Lab? Wear gloves and safety eyewear to avoid contact with corrosive materials such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Be careful when heating liquids using a hot plate and when using sharp instruments. Do not taste any substances in the laboratory. Enzymes are substances that speed chemical reactions. With the help of the enzyme catalase, it destroys harmful substances found nearly in every living organism to stop the attack of toxic substances that can mutate the DNA. Toxic substances such as hydrogen peroxide ( H_2 O_2) is produced in the body because of the lose electrons of …show more content…

This form bubbles that helps in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. On the other hand, test tube 1 and test tube 2 have lesser bubbles because the potato and hydrogen peroxide are already used. Thus, the catalase and the enzymes have reduced reaction through the experiment. In test tube 3, containing water and potato, acts as an uncontrolled group because it is expected that there is no reaction. This is also the basis of the reaction because there is no chemical substance that is
