Canadian pension, the plan that promises to provide a set income once retirement, passed during 1965 in order to make an effort for those who have great losses and are struggling with finance after retirement due to the great depression, disability, and death costs. The Canadian Pension Plan was used to help reduce the poverty levels in Canada when it was noticed that the poverty rate at an old age reached 72.5%. After the Canadian pension plan passed laws during 1965, the poverty rate of seniors reduced by 30% by 1976. It is clear to see how within a decade the poverty level has decreased by 52.5% thus further proving the efficiency of the Canadian Pension plan. This means that Canadians can enjoy the rest of their lives without work and can use the pension money for all their necessities and luxuries thus further providing the youth more opportunities for jobs, overall increasing their quality of life for the better. As said by the Canadian Museum of history, “ In 1965, with the passing of the Canada Pension Plan legislation, the qualifying age for Old Age Security was reduced from 70 to 65.” This demonstrates how the Canadian Pension plan had influenced the way Old Age Security worked. It is clear that this overall allowed seniors to receive Old Age Security at a younger and more appropriate age thus allowing Canadians to financially support themselves by having the opportunity to receive a monthly payment that does not depend on their income or a job. It was a very important period for Canada; it was where they gained their independence and progressed as a country. After this century, Canada was considered an important and powerful country. Meanwhile, Old Age Insurance (Social Security) was established under the Roosevelt Administration but unfortunately did not include coverage for agricultural and domestic workers. Without social security benefits, retired or disabled citizens were unable to pass down savings to the next generation because any savings earned were more than likely spent on daily expenses. The lack of social security insurance required the second generation to care for and support indigent and/or elderly family members which diverted resources away from their savings and capital accumulation.

The results obtained in the primary research reinforce the support of the strategies presented. Majority of the participants understand the possible economic and health care issues the aging population will bring, thus getting started on this matter sooner will be beneficial for Canada’s future.

The confederation all started in 1763, with The Royal Proclamation. Britain decided that pacifying First nation was the best alternative to a costlier war. This proclamation created a boundary between the First Nations and the British Colonies. In the next 50 years or so, the Quebec Act, which revoked the Royal Proclamation, and Treaty of Paris, which recognized British North America to independently exist, and the Constitutional Act, happened. Social security, since instituted in 1935, has kept many elderly people from running below the poverty line (Hosansky). In 2015, the Social Security Administration predicted that the funds would be depleted by 2034 (Max). This poses a serious threat to the living situation of future generations when they retire. Our elderly, by today’s standards, enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. They are able to retire and still make over one thousand dollars a month. Some people also have private pensions which allow them to live even more comfortably. But with social security funds running out, we must ask the inevitable question. There were many major influences that got us to where we are today, and while they made us who we are, they could’ve been made with less favouritism towards the English.
