There are many tourist attractions in Washington D.C, but there is one in particular that is special, The U.S. Botanic Gardens. It is one of the oldest botanic gardens in North America and its exterior has not really changed over time. It is home to almost 10,000 living specimens, some of them 165 years old. The U.S. Botanic Garden is a beautiful tourist attraction where people can experience plants and become one with nature. It informs visitors about the importance and irreplaceable value of plants.
The Botanic Garden is currently located on 100 Maryland Avenue SW, District of Columbia. The Botanic Garden is composed of three parts: the Conservatory, the National Garden, and Bartholdi Park. Bartholdi Park is located across the street from the main building, which includes the Conservatory and National Garden. Each part has an important exhibit that makes them special.
The U.S. Botanic Garden would not be here today without the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences. The Institute proposed the creation of a botanic garden in 1816, to grow and collect plants from all over the world. Even though the Colombian Institute thought of it, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison made it happen. In 1820, they dreamed of establishing a national botanic garden in the National Mall. After a few meetings discussing the production of The Botanic Garden, they decided to stop because the project was not developed enough. All of these plants looked at by Michael Pollan are crops; they help us just as much as we help them by industrializing them they continue to thrive while we are able to profit off peoples wants a desires for these plants. They are continuing to adapt to be used by us, to be transported around the world, to feed our families. Plants play a major role in our lives that some people don’t understand and the greatest threat facing all of these plants is the threat of falling out of fashion, once people lose interest the wonder of these plants are lost.
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, also known as the Museum of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, opened in 1857 and is one of the oldest natural history museums in the United States. It has had several locations, but is now permanently situated in a modern building in Lincoln Park as part of the city’s museums-in-the-parks program. There are many different exhibits, aimed mainly at helping children learn about nature. Children can experience the more than 1,000 butterflies in the butterfly haven, bird watch, learn about animal extinction, experience green living, watch scientists interact with spiders and other living creatures, hike the short nature trail, play in the hands-on habitat (toddlers), or enjoy any of the other fun and educational exhibits the museum offers. Washington Square Park is home to thousands of New York University Students, families leisurely strolling through the park on afternoons, people cooling off at the fountain during the summer, couples lounging on the green grass, and even home to the New York City Pillow Fight held during the summer. At the center of Greenwich Village, it provides an escape from the busy traffic and city surrounding it. Most importantly, it is home to the Washington Square Arch.
