How can alternative sources of energy be harnessed effectively?
Biogas has been found to be a sustainable source of energy which is creates less emissions compared to coal and oil (1). Due to everyday needs and wants of the growing populations of the world, natural resources have been used and over used to a point where they are no more as available, such as fossil fuels in Kristianstad(2). This unfortunately creates concern for the future however, an alternative source of energy has been found and is being implemented in the Swedish city so that the strain on the over use of natural resources can be relieved(3). Biogas is produced from biomass and it is the best sustainable plan as a source of energy and a way to be more environmentally conscious(4).
In Kristianstad, Sweden - fossil fuels were used for up to twenty years before it was replaced by biogas. The city relied mainly on fossil fuels to generate heat for its homes and businesses. Fossil fuels were a reliable source of energy but it cost too much for the continent and the use of it was taxed by the European Union’s carbon trading system so a new solution had to be developed. This solution was the use of biogas, which is created by burning waste materials such as potato peels, manure, used cooking oil, stale cookies and pig intestines to generate heat and electricity or is refined as fuel for cars. Biogas uses such materials that would otherwise decompose in farm fields or massive landfills that wouldn’t create any benefits. Biogas contain gas impurities that are corrosive to the internal parts of combustion engines which means that the maintenance costs for the engines would increase if there is continuous production of biogas, this corrosion also is induced in combustion engines such as car engines and boilers. Biogas plants also need high energy and heat; so some of the produced biogas needs to be used on site to meet the demands of production.
Biogas has replaced other sources of energy that could not be harnessed as well as biogas. Since the discovery of this sustainable source there has been a decrease on impacts from some countries on global warming as well as improvements in economies. It is and will continue to be the most sustainable source for energy as long as there are waste products to use, however the search for other sustainable sources should still be identified.
Our energy needs have significantly changed since the first Industrial Revolution that took place in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. Before this time period, our energy needs were modest. For heat, people relied on the energy of the sun, but when it failed them, they burned wood, straw and dried dung. For transportation horses and the power of the wind was used in sails. For agricultural work animals were used to do the jobs that could not be done with man labor. By harnessing the power of steam and wind simple machines could be run to grind our grain and pump our water. This technological Revolution is considered as the second phase of the Industrial Revolution that resulted in factory electrification, mass production, the creation of production lines and the development of machine tools. With the appearance of the low cost automobile and the wide spread of electricity our society's energy needs have changed forever. Since the modest beginning of the oil industry in the mid 19th century, petroleum has risen to global dominance leading to mass consumption as the primary fuel to generate electricity, heat, to power our homes, cars and to support economic growth. There are many different types of alternative fuels. Ethanol is derived domestically from corn and other crops it creates less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels. (fueleconomy.gov) Bio diesel is produced from oils which are from vegetables also some animal fats; it will most likely create less air pollutants than petroleum based fuels do in the environment. From the home to factories, families and industries are reliant on the use of nonrenewable fossil fuels to feed the needs of the everyday human. Fossil fuels are the main source of energy over clean, renewable sources such as the use of wind, solar energy, and water to power our homes, schools, and industries. Biodiesel is considered an environmentally friendly alternative because it reduces the amount many toxic substances. Plants such as soybeans require carbon dioxide from the air to produce their stems, roots and leaves. During biodiesel production from soybean oil, carbon dioxide is produced and released in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered a green house gas (GHG). However, this cycle of GHG emission does not neccersarily contribute to the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This is because the next soybean crop will reuse the carbon dioxide emitted for its growth. Another important environmental benefit is that biodiesel reduces particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. These benefits occur because biodiesel contains 11% oxygen by weight. Oxygen allows the fuel to burn better, resulting in fewer emissions from unburned fuel. And lastly, biodiesel fuels do not contain any sulfur and does not have an unpleasant smell when it is emitted from vehicles.

Woodfuel is not a new form of fuel; historically wood has been used as fuel for millennia with many civilisations relying on it as a source of energy. Even today the global south still use wood to produce heat. At the turn of the 19th century wood in the UK was no longer the main source of energy, but instead fossil fuel, which now outlines and dominates the way we live today. Furthermore with a growing population since World War II, much of the UK agricultural land has been used for conservation schemes and agricultural harvest only. Nevertheless with the rising concern of climate change, woodlands are now emerging to be used again for the use of renewable energy. Woodfuel in the UK is available as sawdust, pellets, sheets, charcoal chips, and firewood. The particular type used depends upon factors such as application, quality, quantity and source. When we view the geography of woodfuel in the UK we can view it from a broader perspective that reflects the discipline of geography. Sustainability is a way which tries to combine earth landscapes, environments and people together. We view sustainability “through the so called ‘three pillars’, namely economic, social and environmental or ecological” (Gregory et al 2009: 738) and it is these pillars which are to “be used as a benchmark for goals in which we must achieve” (O’ Riordan 2004: 245) so that we can use todays resources without compromising future generations supplies. For years man has relied on energy in order to be successful in life. The industrial revolution relied on coal for the new inventions brought into the world.
