The Benefits of GMOs in Today’s World What does the term GMO mean? GMO is genetically modified organisms that were created by two scientists who spliced genes from one kind of organism into the DNA of another. In 1996, tobacco was the first genetically engineered plant, tested in Belgium and in 1997, the testing of tobacco and tomatoes was conducted in the United States. There are many questions and concerns and speculations of how genetically modified organisms affect the food that is consumed by the population, which in turn affects everyone’s general health. With the world’s population increasing at a tremendous rate, how are we supposed to produce enough food for everyone? Individuals often say that little farms are “bullied” into buying products that are genetically modified instead of the organic. They claim this by stating that the company will over price the organic seed, or the sales representative will push relentlessly for the GMO seed. But the organic seed is not more than genetically modified seed. Genetically modified seed goes through a process to make it more resistant to disease which in fact makes it more than an all-natural seed. Organic produce will typically make a couple dollars more to the bushel than the none organic produce, but the farmer will have a lower yield and will have more man hours in the field to keep it weed free then that of the genetically modified seeds. Welshans (2015) quotes Brian Scott, an Indiana farmer, who states, “No seed companies force him into buying any particular type of seed. The sales person may recommend the newest and greatest type but the farm has to pick what is best for what they need.” Scott also noted that if the seed company offers genetically modified seed they also offer organic
