With each passing day, humans make great advancements in the world of technology. One of these advancements is the use of “artificial intelligence,” or computer systems that have the capability of performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence to accomplish. The various uses of “artificial intelligence” causes people to form opinions on it as a whole, often leading to debates on the topic. Authors like Susan Bennett, Neil Harbisson, Joi Ito, Garry Kasparov, Shauna Mei, Nnedi Ohorafor, and Faith Popcorn, voice their various perspectives on the matter. Ito notes that the algorithms that create E.I. are trained by humans and can propagate the same biases that plague society, perpetuating them under the guise of “smart machines (Ito).” Ito’s purpose is to inform his audience of the potential danger of technology that is meant to advance our well-being.
Bennett’s definition of “artificial intelligence” is personal devices that retrieve information for humans, and Ito’s is algorithms that extract data from the internet. While some may view that statement as bad, Popcorn provides her audience with a different perspective. She speaks of translation apps that are on the verge of making real-time conversations flow around the globe, robots diagnosing diseases when doctors can’t, as well as alleviate loneliness when our life span stretches to age 150 (Popcorn).
